Lifestyle
I am a crustacean. Crabs and shrimps are also crustaceans. I have a hard shell that protects me from predators; it's called an exoskeleton. When I grow larger, I will molt, or shed, my old exoskeleton. I will then grow a larger exoskeleton to fit my new size. I spend my days hiding in caves or underneath coral ledges.
Fun Facts
I don't have big front claws like other lobsters, but I do have long spines covering much of my body and my antennae. My front two antennae can grow up to 2 feet (61 cm) long! I use my antennae to smell and sniff out my prey. I also rub my antenna against my head to make a loud grinding noise; this is a warning to stay away from me!
Menu
At night, however, I crawl around the reef and hunt for food. I eat other animals, so I am a carnivore. I like to eat snails, clams, crabs, and sea urchins. I am also a scavenger, so I will also eat dead things, like fish, that I find on the floor of the reef. Since I will eat a wide variety of things, it's usually not hard for me to find food.
Threats
Many people think I'm delicious! While I'm good to eat, humans must be careful that they don't take too many of me out of the reef! Reefs are in danger, and that means so is my home!
