The sound of this breaking under my feet
is deafening in the silence and the summer heat
and I feel like nothing I can do will stave
what we have from going, going away.

It's like an hour could pass us by
and in the end we wouldn't even wonder why
we left it all to be taken in
by a cold and bitter, a stinging wind.

I don't know, I don't know how
I left you in that empty house,
where the windows hung like a guilty man
And, with the past at my back, I ran.

And you couldn't bring me back,
you couldn't bring me back.
And you couldn't bring me back,
you couldn't bring me back.

The air was cold on that December day,
the last rays of light were crawling away
and nothing felt like it was alive
'cause what we had receded with the tide.

It's like our lives could have passed us by
and in the end we wouldn't have wondered why
we left it all to be taken in
by a cold and bitter, a killing wind.

And I don't know how, I don't know how
I closed my eyes and tried to live this down.
With a heart so heavy I could barely move,
I left the room.

And you couldn't bring me back,
you couldn't bring me back.
And you couldn't bring me back,
you couldn't bring me back.

And you couldn't bring me back,
you couldn't bring me back.
And you couldn't bring me back again.
