Hey you! This is Giggler01 and I just finished watching the men's hockey
final in the Olympics. My dad can barely talk because he was screaming so
loud. That can't be healthy.
And you know what? That makes twice this week that Canada has defeated the USA for a gold medal in hockey. The women did it Thursday and the men did it today. And now Canada celebrates. 50 years gone by -- it's our golden anniversary! The people in my class kept saying, "They're gonna win!" The media told us different, but we won!
That's not what I'm here to talk about, but in a way, it is. I am sure that
even if you didn't watch the Olympics, you heard something. It could have
been in any sport, but I know you heard about them. Well, what was the
highlight for your Olympics? Were your Olympics a time world peace, or world
controversy?
A sport that didn't get off to a good start was figure skating, with the
whole pairs figure skating problems and the "corrupt French judge". We were
so wrapped up in that problem that it cast a shadow on all the other sports.
We were too busy worrying about this problem in figure skating to worry about the other sports, and that was a mistake. The Olympics last for two weeks every four years, and we missed a week of them worrying about this. This was world controversy.
If you lived in the US or Canada or Russia or Austria or somewhere else
that won lots of medals, you may be very proud. The USA won their most
medals ever in a winter games, and only finished second to Germany. This
was world peace.
In cross-country skiing we started a major problem. The women's relay team
was disqualified for a high count of red blood cells in one of their
athletes. Now this was only the start. Between the russian figure skating
problems, and now they have a cross-country problem and they were sayign
that they were going to with draw all of their athletes from these winter
games. Two words: World controversy.
In the opening ceremonies the entire world felt peace. We all watched the
colours of the world carried in to the stadium and the flag from TWTC was
carried in. As the entire world united in that stadium and that was world
peace.
Today, along with hockey, three skiers are made headlines. But they didn't
make headlines for reasons of world peace. No, they wanted to win so badly
that they cheated and lost their gold medals. Isn't that sad? And if it
wasn't world peace, then you know what it was.
My world peace memory isn't so famous. I was really sick during the middle
part of the Olympics. I could barely move so I just laid on the couch and fell asleep. When I woke up, I was watching men's biathalon. Now, I've never
been a big fan of biathalon, but I couldn't change the channel, so I watched
it. They got to the part where they shoot the targets and all the flags of
the world popped up on the screen because they were all ready to start firing.
That was really awesome.
So... Tonight I will watch the closing ceremony and that will be a time for
world peace, the true meaning of the Olympics. If this does get published,
it means that you're reading this, and the Olympics will be over; but will
there still be world peace or world problems? Some how I think that'll
happen.
It will be four years until we see the winter Olympic games again and two
more until the summer Olympics, and until then, we've got to focus more on
the peace, not the controversy, because those moments do happen, even though we may not always see them.
It's not always about the medals. It's about the games themselves.
Waiting for them is a great and awful thing and it always will be because
we're human.
I have to go do my English homework. My friends taught me this trick with
mashed potatoes, yogurt and chocolate milk that makes it look like you threw
up. Very cool. Now I gotta go mash some potatoes. TTYL!
