Manners -- most kids and pre-teens try to dodge the subject, including me. But, over the last week, I have realized how impolite people are. So, I am going to remind everyone about what we should do.

One thing I noticed was no one says, "Bless you!" after someone sneezes now. Okay, I can understand if no one says it on Whyville. I mean, we sneeze because we need medicine, we don't need people to say, "Bless you!" But in real life, you should be one of the first people to say, "Bless you!" after someone sneezes. It seems like the only people who say it now are teachers! It's crazy. So, next time you hear someone sneeze in class, just say, "Bless you!" The teacher won't mind. You're just being polite.

Another thing, what happened to, "What's the magic word?" Nobody seems to be saying "please" anymore. The only time we really say it in Whyville is to get cough medicine or something. People need to say "please" more! You should even say it for stupid things like asking someone to pick up a pencil that fell off your desk. Just a simple, "Could you pick up my pencil, please?" will make a huge difference. It could be really easy once you get used to it.

And, last but not least, we need to say "thank you" more, even though I think this is one of our strengths when it comes to manners. I hear people say "thank you" more than anything else. But still, a little more of it couldn't hurt, could it?

Okay, now to explain why I think we should be more polite. Imagine this, all Whyvillians started saying "Bless you!", "thank you", and "please". Then, suddenly, the Whyvillians in real life started passing the politeness on to Non-Whyvillians friends. Then, all those friends passed the politeness to more friends and adults. Then, suddenly, everyone had passed on politeness and everyone was getting along.

I know that just saying "please", "thank you", and "Bless you!" won't make much of a difference. But think about it. It has a ripple effect. Soon, we would all be getting along. Wars wouldn't happen as much. Fights would be scarce. We would live in a peaceful world with polite people who all get along. It's one of those small changes in life that can make a BIG difference. Let the politeness pass along!

Thanks!
