We all know that bad habits are hard to get rid of. Whether it be not doing your homework, procrastinating, not doing chores, or anything else, it will be hard to kick to the curb. But it can be done. And since I'm doing this right now, right here, too, battling my habit, nail biting, I'm going to show you how!

First off, let's get one thing straight; no matter what, do not make excuses. If you do, you will never get it done. Most common excuses are:

"I tried. Couldn't do it. Oh well."
"I hate the habit, and I'm going to stop later."
"If I quit on Monday, then I will be fine. If not, I will start again next week."
"No. I do not have a bad habit to break. I'm perfectly fine with me."

Notice how all of these are either procrastinating or just ignoring it. Lots of people don't like to admit to themselves that they have a problem. I have tried this so many times, using these and more. I never admitted that I bit my nails until this year. And the sad thing? I've been doing it since I was four.

Cold turkey is not easy, but doable. 'Cold turkey' is where you just stop. You have had enough of it, and stop your habit. Think about it, are you just going to, after reading this article, say, "Well. I'm done. I'm going to fix that right now." and stop? Of course not. This is only for the strong of heart and for those who really want to change. If you do not wish to fix your habit, then that's fine. I can't stop you, but it is you who it is going to affect, not me.

Gradually weaning yourself out of your ways is slightly easier. On Monday, say, "I will not do my habit more than ten times today." On Tuesday, say, "I will not do my habit more than seven times today." On Wednesday, say, "I will not do my habit more than four times today." And so on. If you follow this, then you could do it. And just remember, no matter what you are trying to change, there is always a finish line at the end. Even if it takes forever, there is always that goal on the other side.

For most habits, unless it is a personality type of thing, there are preventives. Like for biting nails, you could buy some nasty tasting nail polish to apply everyday. I used that and now I am off of it. I can still do it. Just keep trying! And trying the 'placebo' effect could work too. The placebo effect is where you believe you are being fixed by something, such as a preventive, and it is really you! You saved yourself, and you don't even realize it. Having hope works just as well.

So go out there and at least try to kick your habit in the butt and send it along it's merry way.
