I live in a small town in Canada that you have never heard of. We don't have a mall. We have nothing to do; it's a boring town. Recently my friend and I took a trip to the city and we had tons of fun. I noticed a lot of differences between my small town and the city. This inspired me to interview some Whyvillians about their thoughts on small towns vs. big cities.

ocean10kv: Do you live in the city, or in a small town?

Corporate: I live in a really small town!
Xion2: I am from a city just north or LA (pop. approx. 250,000) and recently moved to a small town (pop. 6000) in WA state.
DinoNut: I live in a small town, barely even a town, it doesn't have a city limit but it's in the nice quiet country.
sammy2101: I live in a kind of bigger small town but not quite a city.
NNTNDODSI: Well, it is a city, but it is really small.
lilchiche: I live in the city.

ocean10kv: Are you happy with where you live?

Corporate: I love living in a small town because everybody sort of knows everyone.
Xion2: YES! I love this small town! It has a lot of forests and everyone is so nice and you know everyone.
DinoNut: Yeah I'm happy with my town it has fun things to mess with!
sammy1201: Yes, I'm very happy with where I live.
NNTNDODSI: Yes, there are a lot of nice people, nice places, and good friends. I love it! We have everything we need!
lilchiche: I love where I live, it's beautiful here.

ocean10kv: Have you ever considered what your life would be like if you lived elsewhere? (City if your answer to #1 was a small town, and vise versa)

Corporate: Yeah, I've considered but I don't really think I'd like it too much; I hate traffic.
Xion2: Well, when I lived in the city, I had to be meaner, and tougher. People were mean. Now, living in a town, people are all "country" people.
DinoNut: I think my life would be more boring cause I wouldn't have the greatest country accent but then again I could have more modern stuff maybe or more clothes.
sammy2101: I don't think my life would be much different if I lived in a city. If it were a big city like New York city then I would probably use different means of transportation.
NNTNDODSI: If I was to live in a small town, it would be harder to get the stuff that other people in cities have. For example: the right music, stadiums, etc. We wouldn't have people coming to our town for like concerts and stuff, we would have to drive to a close city to see the certain people.
lilchiche: I have sometimes wondered how my life would be if I was from a small town, less people in small towns create closeness and community, like knowing who your neighbors are.

ocean10kv: Where do you think is a safer place to live? Why?

Corporate: Probably a small town because in cities, some air is polluted and there's more break-ins but also more police!
Xion2: Small town. NO question. In a large city, there are always criminals. In a small town, people are nicer and there aren't many people, much less criminals.
DinoNut: A small town cause there's barely anyone that will do anything to you.
sammy2101: Probably a small town, I think that in most small towns that lots of people know each other so it seems friendlier to me. I'm not saying it isn't at times though.
NNTNDODSI: I think a safer place to live would be a small town. Because you could become friends with everyone and no one would have a reason to harm you. People usually are not bad in small towns either.
lilchiche: I definitely think that depends on the place, there's always bad people in the world and they can come from anywhere. My city specifically I think is quite a safe city.

ocean10kv: Who do you think has a better life? People who live in small towns, or people who live in the city? Why?

Corporate: I think it's up to anyone, because everybody is different. But I'd go with a small town.
Xion2: I think small towns. People are nicer, and it has less pollution and is cleaner.
DinoNut: People who live in small towns; they have some unique traits in them.
sammy2101: I can't really answer that question, it depends on the person and their opinions. I prefer small towns though.
NNTNDODSI: It depends what you like and what you want to do in your future. For me, I think it would better to live in the city because I want to have a career in music when I am older, and it is easier to get stuff. But, if I liked bugs and I wanted to be a grain farmer or something when I am older, I would want to live in a small town so I could connect with nature.
lilchiche: I think that's all in a person's perception, some people are meant to live a small town lifestyle, and others are happier with the hustle and bustle of city life.

ocean10kv: Which place has more things to do, like activities and stuff?

Corporate: Cities; in MY small town, there is nothing to do except bowling . . . which gets old after the first time.
Xion2: It depends on what your in to. They have more horseback riding, and hiking in a small town. In a city, they have more arcades and sports and malls and stuff like that.
DinoNut: A city, small towns have parks and ponds, a city has amusement parks and all that stuff.
sammy2101: I think they both have their fair share of things to do.
NNTNDODSI: I think the city has more stuff to do because we have arenas and stadiums that people in small towns don't have.
lilchiche: I would definitely say cities have more activities to offer like big shopping malls, theaters, professional sports, etc.

ocean10kv: In your opinion, what are some negatives of living in the city?

Corporate: Pollution, and traffic.
Xion2: It's dangerous. You never know who that guy in the other side of the store is. There is always more traffic.
DinoNut: Robbery, shootings, and makes you a grumpy old person.
sammy2101: I haven't been in big cities very much, but I don't really like the large amount of people. I prefer less populated areas.
NNTNDODSI: Some negatives are that people sometimes harm you or like break into your house or something. But nothing bad has happened to me.
lilchiche: Some negatives from living in the city would be long commute times and not having a sense of community that comes with knowing who your neighbors are.

ocean10kv: In your opinion, what are some negatives of living in a small town?

Corporate: It's BORING!
Xion2: It is harder to find a gas station. Just kidding. There aren't many stores.
DinoNut: There's probably nothing wrong with a small town.
sammy2101: I don't really have many negatives when it comes to small towns.
NNTNDODSI: Some negatives would be that it is harder to get the certain stuff that you want. For example: in small towns you can just get big TVs. But in the city, you can get a HD plasma flatscreen 3D TV.
lilchiche: I think the lack of activities to do in a small town could potentially lead to kids getting into bad things which is definitely a negative, and also I've heard small towns are very gossipy which would be annoying having everyone know your business.

ocean10kv: In your opinion, what are some positives of living in the city?

Corporate: More things to do, more places to go.
Xion2: There is a lot of stuff, and different people.
DinoNut: You can see more people and get to know things like music better.
sammy2101: You get to meet new people because of the big and constantly growing population.
NNTNDODSI: Some positives are that people in the city have more stuff, more people to become friends with and, there are also more houses that have "Your Design."
lilchiche: I think a major positive to living in a city would be the countless number of opportunities that are at your disposal.

ocean10kv: In your opinion, what are some positives of living in a small town?

Corporate: You know everyone!
Xion2: Everyone can be kinder. It is cleaner. People are healthier because they do more outdoor activity.
DinoNut: You can find things to do when there aren't many things to go to.
sammy2101: Having a nice community most of the time.
NNTNDODSI: Some positives are that there is more land, all the people in the town that you can become friends with, and all the stuff it closer together so less gas wasted!
lilchiche: Again, I think the positives of living in a small town would be the sense of community that they have, everyone knows everyone.

ocean10kv: Where do you think is a better place to go to school? Why?

Corporate: Probably a city; where I go to school, since it's so small rumors travel FAST . . .
Xion2: Small town. Cities have dangerous kids. Small towns have more hard working kids.
DinoNut: A city cause there are schools with better ratings on them like 1A 2A 3A 4A or 5A.
sammy2101: I think the big city, but that may be because I have only gone to a small town school so I'm not sure of the downsides.
NNTNDODSI: I think a city would be a better place to go to school. Because there are more schools and there are public schools and Catholic schools.
lilchiche: Small towns lead to small schools which can either good or bad depending on any school drama that happens, because it wouldn't probably include the entire school. City schools have hundreds of people it enables you to have certain anonymity so drama doesn't always have to effect you, so for that reason I'd say city schools would be preferable to me.

ocean10kv: Have you ever visited the city/a small town (opposite of where you live) if yes, what are your thoughts on it?

Corporate: Yes, and I like both! I think the city is nice and there's lots of places to go, but in my little town there's almost no need for police!
Xion2: I used to live in the city. I didn't like it nearly as much.
DinoNut: No I lived in the same small town my whole life.
sammy2101: Yes, I've been to New York, and I had a great time. Although coming home was nice too.
NNTNDODSI: Yes, I have been to a small town. It is cool and everybody knows everybody there! It looks fun.
lilchiche: I've visited the small town where my mom grew up and also the town my dad was from, and my opinion of them is basically that they're nice to visit because of the family history there, but I would never actually want to live there.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer those questions for me! Feel free to go to the BBS to share your thoughts . . . are you a country mouse or a city mouse?
