Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Spongebob Squarepants, of course! Everyone's seen the show, and it has been a big part of the lives of many of today's children and teens.

Last week, I was searching the BBS, as I often do (more often than I'd like to admit, in fact). Suddenly, I noticed a post in the "Movies & TV" section about the show Spongebob Squarepants. Being the huge fan that I am, I clicked the thread. Long story short, I read over 7 pages of simply hilarious quotes from the show, nearly falling out of my chair in laughter all the while. I've been watching this show for as long as I remember, and this thread made me realize that I was not the only Spongebob-crazed kid left. So today, I have kittypet, natnat10, and xoxkitkat to talk about our favorite sponge, starfish, squid, squirrel, and the rest of the crew.

tanibanan: How long have you been watching Spongebob for?

xoxkitkat: Um . . . like my whole life, or however long it's been airing for. Whichever one comes last, haha.
kittypet: Since it first came out in 1999, when I was 6.
natnat10: Since the show premiered in 1999.

tanibanan: What is your favorite episode of Spongebob? (You don't have to know the exact name of the episode, just describe it)

xoxkitkat: I'm almost positive it was the first episode, when Spongebob goes to the Krusty Krab to get hired, and he has to buy the hydrodynamic spatula and save Krabs and Squidward from the evil swarm of hungry anchovies.
kittypet: Not know the names? Psh. I have two, one old and one new. "Pizza Delivery", in which Spongebob and Squidward get lost while trying to deliver the first and only krusty krab pizza, and "Skill Crane", where Mr. Krabs buys a claw machine full of toys to make extra money and Squidward is a little overdetermined to win a stuffed animal when he keeps failing, while Spongebob wins every time.
natnat10: "Shanghaied", where the Flying Dutchman lands his anchor in Spongebob's house, and Spongebob and Patrick think the sky had a baby! Then they climb up the rope and found his ship. The Flying Dutchman holds them as prisoners and makes them do whatever he says.

tanibanan: Why do you think this show appeals to people?

xoxkitkat: It's HILARIOUS. Every two seconds they give you something to laugh at. Whoever writes these episodes is a genius.
kittypet: Well, most cartoons appeal to small children just because they enjoy the animation and noises, even though they may not necessarily understand what is happening, which is why it appealed to me at first. Even now at age 17, I still enjoy watching it because I understand all the hidden humor that went right over my head at a younger age.
natnat10: Spongebob is funny. People like funny, even if it's ridiculous.

tanibanan: There has been a lot of controversy regarding the newer episodes of Spongebob, specifically, the ones that were made after the Spongebob movie. What is your opinion of them?

xoxkitkat: They definitely have a different flavor to them. They're not necessarily bad, just different. I think I prefer the older episodes, but I like how they've incorporated more singing in the newer versions.
kittypet: Well, around the time the Spongebob Squarepants movie came out was the time when the show itself was put on a hiatus and production was suspended, meaning there were a lot of re-runs instead of new episodes, which took a toll on the viewer count. It's also when Stephen Hillenburg, the original creator of Spongebob, resigned his position as the show's executive producer to Derek Drymon, and Derek Drymon gave his job as the creative director to Paul Tibbitt. So obviously, with all these changes, the show would be slightly different, and a lot of people were not okay with the changes.
natnat10: I personally prefer the episodes before the Spongebob movie because they're funnier. The episodes after the movie aren't exactly funny and are just lame.

tanibanan: Who is your favorite character, and why?

xoxkitkat: That's a hard one, but I think I'm gonna have to go with Patrick. He's just so darn adorable! And he's hilarious because he doesn't have this outwardly funny attitude, but his actions are just naturally hilarious.
kittypet: Patrick. He makes the most priceless faces I have ever seen in animated history. I also love when he's randomly intelligent for a few seconds and confuses everyone with his knowledge.
natnat10: Squidward! I love how he hates everyone and everything. He makes the show even better.

I would like to thank xoxkitkat, kittypet, and natnat10 for participating in this interview. I liked seeing other people's perspectives on one of my favorite shows, and I hope that you did too! If you have never seen the show, which I highly doubt, I would definitely recommend watching it. It may be a show made for kids, but it truly appeals to people of all ages. Remember, licking doorknobs is illegal on other planets.

Signing off,
tanibanan
