Sometimes it is a friend,
sometimes it is a foe.
Sometimes it yanks the the tether back
and sometimes it lets it go.

When you think you've gotten rid of it,
you find it behind your back.
It lives inside your shadow,
and it is always ready to attack.
You can use your sword or shield,
but your defense is no match.

When you are in it's wrath,
your body is consumed in pain.
Your eyes well up and tears pour out,
it makes you cry the rain.
And when the sun finally does comes up,
you want to hide in shame . . .

it doesn't matter if you have friends;
it makes you feel alone.
it doesn't matter if you're by a fireplace;
you feel like you're in the snow.

It makes you wonder why you're living life,
it makes you want to die!
The only way to win the fight
is to live your life with pride.
Because even though depression hurts,
you must try to smile!
