There are tons of music genres out there, and everyone seems to have one that they prefer or respect more than the others. I would curious as to which genres were appreciated within preteen/teen girls on Whyville, so I conducted an interview on several music genres to see what the genres' fans had to say about the music. The answers given were very interesting and I appreciate what they had to say. If you are curious in learning about what people your age think of different music genres, or which ones you should try listening to next, this article is for you.

Kittieme: When did you first start liking your music genre?

Pop

Monet1616: I've always had a taste for every music genre, so probably when I was about 5.
Natnat10: Well, I've always liked pop music. Probably because I grew up watching Disney and a lot of the music on there was pop, like Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers.

Country

LoveEmma: When I was little.
Monet1616: I'm gonna guess when I was around 5 or 6.

Alternative/Rock

Jillith: I think it was in a July . . . I don't know, that was almost ten years ago.
Kameryn2: Long ago.

Hip-Hop/Rap/Dance Music

WillowBoo: I always have. I've never listened to anything else.

Screamo

Krissai: Around 5 months ago.

Kittieme: What do you think your music genre has that other music genres are missing?

Pop

Monet1616: Pop is just so upbeat.
Natnat10: Uh, I don't know. I just like the sound of it.

Country

LoveEmma: Hmm. Well, I'm not sure. There's just something to it that makes it extremely catchy.
Monet1616: I personally think country music has artists that aren't all writing about shallow things like booze, getting around, and money. We have those in every genre but country, and I'm sure opera.

Alternative/Rock

Jillith: I think it has the ability to say things that the other ones can't. Rock seems able to pull me from reality.
Kameryn2: It sounds really cool.

Hip-Hop/Rap/Dance Music

WillowBoo: Feelings. I hate turning on the radio and hearing a song that has nothing to do with anything . . . .just a random dumb song. I love songs that have feelings and meanings. Example: "How to Love" by Lil' Wayne.

Screamo

Krissai: It's just different, I like different.

Kittieme: Who are your favorite artists/bands in your music genre?

Pop

Monet1616: Lady Gaga, of course.
Natnat10: Lady Gaga, Lady Gaga, and Lady Gaga

Country

LoveEmma: I like Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, etc.
Monet1616: Brad Paisley for sure.

Alternative/Rock

Jillith: My favorites are Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury, Prince Nelson and Michael Jackson.
Kameryn2: Nevershoutnever, BVB, Paramore, AFI, Flyleaf, etc.

Hip-Hop/Rap/Dance Music

WillowBoo: Wiz Khalifa, Nicki Minaj, Drizzy (aka Drake), Lil Wayne, Tyga, pretty much everyone out of Young Money Cash Money Billionaires, and Chris Brown.

Screamo

Krissai: Black Veil Brides and My Chemical Romance.

Kittieme: How often do you listen to your music genre?

Pop

Monet1616: I listen to pop maybe every day for hours at a time. I love it!
Natnat10: Every day.

Country

LoveEmma: Almost every day.
Monet1616: Not all that often. I've been more into it lately though, so maybe a few times a week.

Alternative/Rock

Jillith: I don't go a day without it.
Kameryn2: Everyday.

Hip-Hop/Rap/Dance Music

WillowBoo: Everyday. I wake up in the morning, eat, then listen to music for the rest of the day.

Screamo

Krissai: Mostly when I'm listening to music!

Kittieme: How popular is your music genre in your area?

Pop

Monet1616: Hmm . . . I'd say it's pretty popular. I'd say everybody in my school has some sort of pop song in their music interests.
Natnat10: Very popular. But not so much Lady Gaga . . .

Country

LoveEmma: Very popular.
Monet1616: Not very popular at all! A lot of the people my age actually hate country. I don't know why.

Alternative/Rock

Jillith: It's not very popular at all, really. The hot stuff is rap and all that junk (no offense, I'm not a fan).
Kameryn2: It's popular to most teens around here.

Hip-Hop/Rap/Dance Music

WillowBoo: Very popular. Where I live, it's the top thing we listen to.

Screamo

Krissai: Not at all; I think I'm the only one who likes Screamo.

Kittieme: What do you like most about your music?

Pop

Monet1616: I love how I always just want to get up and dance to the beat to a good pop song.
Natnat10: Lady GaGa. Well it's a type of music that's fun and you can dance to, and I like the beat.

Country

LoveEmma: Probably how catchy it is. I only have to listen to the song once or twice to know all the lyrics and love it.
Monet1616: I've always been a sucker for guitars and emotion. So naturally, I'm into how most country music has a guitar and some kind of moral.

Alternative/Rock

Jillith: The random things you can throw in to make it sound that much better.

Hip-Hop/Rap/Dance Music

WillowBoo: The feeling it gives you. LoL, this is a funny example but I was listening to "Donk" by Soulja Boy and I couldn't hold myself down. I wanted to get up and dance SOOO bad.

Screamo

Krissai: It's different.

I'd like to thank Jillith, Kameryn2, Krissai, LoveEmma, Monet1616, Natnat10, and WillowBoo for their answers. Though Alternative Rock and R&B are my favorites, it was really interesting learning about what you guys liked music-wise. I looked up several of the artists mentioned, and I appreciate what they have contributed to their genres. Music is one of my favorite things in the world, and I'm always up to exploring new genres. If you are like this too, I highly recommend checking out some of the artists mentioned, because they are very talented and it's easy to see why they are appreciated musicians.

Happy listening!
