Imagine walking down a tunnel, dark, cold and alone. You don't know where it leads to and you don't know if there will be a light at the end.

That's what depression feels like. It's the time in your life when you walk through the darkest tunnel, not knowing when, where or if it will ever end. You hope it will end, you hope one day a light will appear, shining brightly and inviting you into freedom and happiness. You cling to this hope; it's the only thing that keeps you going and keeps you walking down that tunnel.

It feels like that but really you're still living your life. Only you're living your life without color. Everything turns dull and grey. Even a rainbow can look like a storm cloud. Even your dreams turn black and white.

Nothing feels good anymore. You have no energy left inside you. When you look around at the world; at the people they're all frowning. The world is all grey, dull, gloomy and sad. It makes you feel like you want to hide. Hide away from the dark world outside by isolating yourself in even more darkness.

You can't enjoy the things you used to enjoy anymore. The pleasure in them drains dry. The joy and happiness that used to fill your heart sucks out of you leaving just an empty hole. You do not smile, you cannot laugh.

Food doesn't taste good anymore and birthdays just make you feel old. Music is just a bunch of sad, lonely notes playing one after another. You stop hearing the melody in music. You can't hear the melody in life anymore.

Worthless - that's what you feel. You feel cruel for making others suffer because of your depression. It makes you feel like a bad person. It makes you feel like life is bad. All you really want is for it all to end. But, the future, you cling to the chance that there will be a bright and happy ending. Maybe there will be, maybe there won't be.

But you can't give up. You can't give in. Hold your head high.

It's all just a battle. A battle against your mind and you can win. You need to show yourself that you are too strong, too brave to give in and that you're not a quitter. Don't let your negative thoughts and feelings empower you. Know what's best for you, and do it.

If you have depression or any other mental illnesses stay strong and true. Don't let anything overcome you. It's a battle against yourself . . . A battle you can win.

And once that happens, once you get back in control of yourself you will realize so many things. You'll realize just how many people were standing by supporting and backing you up all along. You'll learn that even the simplest pleasures in life can make you smile. Most importantly, you'll learn how to love yourself. The strong person who fought against their mind. The strong person who fought against their mind and won.
