"Amy and Roger's Epic Detour" was written by Morgan Matson, and it touched upon personal experiences of the author. These personal experiences being road trips of her very own.
The book revolves around a road trip that was intended to go from California to Connecticut. Instead, the protagonists (Amy and Roger) hit up various locations off the route, in order to deal with their own issues.
There are a handful of traits that I'd like to discuss for this book. One being the author made many unique personality traits that fit along with the emotional conflicts each character is dealing with, veering straight off the path of your typical characters.
Another factor worth mentioning would be how throughout the book Matson highlights things like photos that 'the characters took', receipts 'the characters bought', as well as playlists 'the characters made'.
In my mind, this was a brilliant addition because she took the book from the page-to-page reading to great pauses where you could admire actual places that the characters visited as well as listen along to the playlists made for the characters.
Being the curious person that I am, I decided to check out one of the songs from the first playlist. The song I decided to listen to was "Drive My Heart Away". The music video decided to take the song into literal meaning shown by a person dressed as an actual heart and the ending consisted of the leading lady literally driving away from the heart.
What got to my attention was how these songs fit into the plot and characters so well, to the point where I spent a good amount of time trying to connect every song to an aspect of the book.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the book beginning with the very opening of it and I'd recommend it to the romantics on Whyville, (you know who you are).
