We all want something that will put a smile on that special someone's face! It's sometimes hard to find a good gift that will be appreciated and meaningful. A homemade pop up cake card is the perfect solution; it looks fancy but is simple to make.

Here's what you'll need to make one:

Colored paper or cardboard
Patterned paper or cardboard
A pencil or a pen
Scissors
Glue
Ribbon
Any other decorations you wish to add
Some spare time

Step 1: Grab a colored piece of paper or cardboard.

Step 2: Fold it in half.

Step 3: Mark the measurements you will need.

Approximately 4.5cm from the top (1.8 inches) draw a 4cm (1.6 inch) line. About 3cm south of this line draw another line, this time 5.5cm (2.2 inches). About 4cm (1.6 inches) south of this line draw another line of 7cm (2.8 inches). Roughly 5cm below this line draw another line of 7cm (2.8 inches). It should look similar to the picture below.

Keep in mind your measurements will vary depending on the size of your paper, how big you want each cake layer to be and how much space you want from the top and bottom. You can vary your measurements accordingly.

Step 4: Cut along the lines you have drawn.

Step 5: Open your paper up.

Step 6: Push your pop up cake forwards.

Step 7: Crease the middle folds.

Step 8: Crease the sides inwards. Try to keep the folds as straight as possible. It should look like the picture below.

Step 9: Fold your card again with your pop up cake inside to seal the creases. It should have made nice rectangular shapes on the outside.

Step 10: Grab a second piece of paper or card board.

Step 11: Glue your second piece onto the back of your pop up cake card.

This will stop the holes from showing as much. You should use the same colour as your pop up cake piece of paper, unless you want a different colour to show through at the back (like I did).

Step 12: Glue a piece of patterned paper onto each layer of the pop up cake.

Step 13: Stick a piece of ribbon onto the top of each cake layer. This will serve as the icing of the cake.

Step 14: Design your candles! You can make them out of patterned paper, coloured sticks, or anything else you may find around the house. You can use sequins or such for candle tops or make them out of paper.

Step 15: Attach your candles to the cake.

Step 16: Decorate the rest of the inside of your card.

Step 17: Decorate the front of your card.

It's nice to keep the front simple, so the receiver gets a big surprise when the card is opened.

There you have it! Now you have an extravagant pop up cake card created by the one and only you. Enjoy!

Author's Note: You don't need to use the same materials as I did or make this card in exactly the same way as me. Be creative!
