We all have heard of ghosts in some form or way and with Halloween coming up this question comes back to all of us. Some may have even had a ghostly encounter. But whether we believe in ghost or not we all have the same underlying question. Are ghosts real or can they be explained with science? This question has been pondered about for hundreds of years, but never actually answered. I'm going to try and clear things up for you and let YOU decide.
I don't want to bore you with super complex material, but I thought this should get a mention, infrasound. Humans can hear sounds up to 20,000 Hertz, but are unable to detect anything lower than 20 hertz. These "silent" noises are called infrasound and we may not be able to hear them, but we can feel them in form of vibrations. Now you're probably wondering, what does this have to do with ghosts? Well, these vibrations can create two intense feeling in you, the feeling of awe or a negative feeling (unease). With the right surroundings this would create a sense of panic. Infrasound is created by many natural things such as storms, winds, weather patterns, and even household appliances! It can also vibrate your eyes and make you see things that aren't there, creepy right?!
While I'm explaining scientific explanations why not mention carbon monoxide poisoning? Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas, which makes it really hard to detect. It's dangerous because our red blood cells absorb CO much easier than they do oxygen, and this oxygen deprivation leads to symptoms such as weakness, nausea, confusion, and eventually death. But before you kick the bucket, you might experience hallucinations! For example, a woman called the authorities after seeing a spirit in her bathroom, funny right? It turned out this "paranormal activity" was due to a leaky water heater that was filling the house with CO.
Now I'm not saying that all ghost sightings are due to this. What you must consider though is that when you are scared or panicking your mind tries to trick you. It wants to create a problem so that it can find a solution. Next time you're in a dark creepy house remember you might not be alone. Are ghosts real? That's for you to decide.
