I once had high hopes for myself
But I couldn't stand how I felt
When I saw through the looking glass
Window into a shameful past
I expected to be in awe
Of the reflection that I saw
And I refused to recognize
The person in front of my eyes

The person I saw was troubled
And inside, her problems bubbled
The girl had gone off the rails
She couldn't tell anyone she failed
She was doing poorly in school
But she had everyone fooled
Even she refused to believe
That she lost her identity

She was living everyday
Wondering how she became this way
How did the student with straight A's
Become a loser with poor grades?
She was scared of starting over
And scared that her friends would mock her
She didn't want her life to worsen
Now, I recognized this person

I looked the girl straight in the eyes
And gave her some worldly advice
That a counselor had given me
About life and how to succeed:
Sometimes you must take two steps back
In order to go one step forward
Work hard and follow your passions
In the end, it'll be worthwhile
