A cheery face
In his happy place;
Hitting baseballs and playing shortstop.
But all the sudden, his heart drops . . .
Grave news reaching his ears.
Making a reality, all of his biggest fears.
So young, just starting to really live life;
But instead, he feels nothing but a sharp knife.
The news went on down the line of wives and players
Silently sending him their prayers.
His nine month old son has passed on,
And Segura, he was the last to know.
The person who was cheery just moments ago
Retreats to his locker and sobs like never before.
This must be a fantasy, must be a lore.
He packs his bags and leaves his team
As his heart tears at the seams.
His teammates heartbroken, fans in shock
No one can speak, no one can talk.
Our beloved Brewer, number nine
Is no longer happy, no longer fine.
Take as much time as you need,
To heal, your wounds must first bleed.
Your fans are praying for you,
Stay strong and do what you need to.
Brewer fans will stand united,
Our love and support for you is ignited.
Thinking of you wherever you are,
We love you, near or far.
Pick up the pieces of your broken heart,
Keep yourself together, don't fall apart.
It'll be hard for quite a while,
But your fans will do anything it takes to make you smile.

Author's Note: Jean Segura, shortstop for the Milwaukee Brewers, had his son pass away Friday night. I attended the baseball game that night and watched him as he got in some hits and was smiling. Jean has taken leave from the team to go back to the Dominican Republic to be with his family in this trying time. Whether he decides to return to baseball or not, he knows his fans have his back. Please keep him in your thoughts as he continues to press through this difficult time. Thank you.
