Many of us use heat on our hair every day - without thinking about it! Have you blow dried or straightened or curled your hair this week? Using heat on your hair damages it and causes split ends. But what if there was a way to stop it? Heatless curling, of course! Heatless curling is a method which has been around for a while. Mothers used to tie their children's hair in rags whilst it was damp. The children would sleep on this and in the morning they would have a full head of curls!

I have straight, thick hair which obstinately refuses to curl, even when I use heat on it! I've literally tried every method of curling my hair without heat, but the only one which had worked for me was the straw curl method. This method produced really tight, bouncy curls and they lasted all day. However, they took two whole hours to put in! A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon this curling method, 'Cocoon Curls' which has definitely worked the best for me. I tried it, not really expecting much to happen, but the results were perfect!

The curls were shiny and bouncy and felt secure. They lasted two whole days! The best part? To do all of my hair, which is fairly long and thick, it took me no less than twenty minutes. In the morning, you just wake up, unravel the cocoons, fix it a little and there you go - BAM! A hairstyle which has been created in only a little time and does little damage to your hair! So . . . I thought I'd give you a tutorial. You need only a brush and a spray bottle. It might also help if you have hair, but y'know. If there's a will . . . there's a way!

To start with, take a two-inch section and brush it out. Dampen it slightly and evenly with the spray bottle. DO NOT OVER DAMPEN OR THE CURL WILL FALL LIMP!

Now, hold the hair a few inches from the scalp and begin to make a knot. You don't actually knot it, just create a loop and hold onto the hair.

Begin to wind the hair on the hair which is above the loop. (This really not very technical and, believe me, it's pretty hard to explain!)

Stop winding when you have about two or three inche of hair left.

Pull the hair halfway. DO NOT PULL IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

Slide the wound hair down, until it stops the loop you've created from falling undone.

Repeat for the rest of your hair. When finished, wrap it up in a bandana or something and sleep on it. In the morning, simply pull the hair poking out and voila! There you have it!

This will work on ALL types of hair! Have confidence in yourself - give it a go!

To style:

Separate curls with your fingers - DO NOT BRUSH!
You can pin the front section back into a 'pompadour'.
You could lacebraid one side.
Wear a cute headband?
Fix with hairspray if desired.

Author's Note: I apologize for poor quality images, but I only have my webcam and I desperately wanted to share this technique!
