I always see people do fashion articles with "inspired looks", and while I do enjoy them, I thought it would be fun to try and make some outfits inspired by some of my favorite musicians and fashion icons. This week I decided to do The Beach Boys, a popular surf-rock group from Southern California that rose to fame in the 1960s. I recently researched the flannel shirts they wore for a massive photo shoot during 1962 (one of which was used for Surfin' Safari and another for Surfer Girl) and it inspired me to write this article.

They were known for wearing "preppy" striped shirts and while only one member was an actual surfer, they also wore outfits inspired by real-life surfers from Southern California. For the first look, I tried to copy the outfits they wore on their classic album, Surfer Girl. I did a male outfit as well as a more feminine outfit, but they are both very similar. The clothes I chose were slightly more high end but I'm sure you can find cheaper alternatives. I did not include shoes for obvious reasons but I think leather flip flops would go very well with both outfits.

Prices for the male look:

Flannel @ pendleton-usa.com for $125 (this is the original shirt they wore!)
Jeans @ levi.com for $68
White shirt @ hanes.com for $6.99

Prices for the female look:

Flannel @ uniqlo.com for $30
Jeans @ macys.com on sale for $39.99
White shirt @ hm.com for $5.95

For the second look I put together outfits inspired by their more "preppy" look. This is what they usually wore for performances and TV appearances. This look was much harder to put together but I think it turned out well. The reason why I chose to use Vans in both of these looks is because while they originally wore penny loafers, I thought they were way too expensive and the leather Vans I found were a cheaper alternative.

Prices for male look:

Shirt @ nordstrom.com on sale for $83.75
Jeans @ levi.com for $68
Shoes @ vans.com for $65

Prices for the female look:

Shirt @ americanapparel.net for $74
Jeans @ uniqlo.com for $50
Shoes @ vans.com for $61

The surfboard is just for show since I had a little bit of extra room, but if you really want it you can get it at onekingslane.com for only $1,099!

I hope you guys enjoyed this article. This was a little different for me but I had fun writing it and putting together the outfits. If I were to do this again (which I will, once I get back from a trip in Europe) I would try to include more accessories.

So, which outfit is your favorite? Would you wear any of them? Who should I do next for "Steal That Look"? Please leave your thoughts on the BBS!
