Does fat really make you fat?

From reading an article in the New York Times magazine, I learned that people are wondering why the majority of the population of America are overweight, even though most high schools and colleges are banning junk food and many companies are coming out with all this new low or no fat food. Researchers believe they may have the answer. The food pyramid!!!

Supposedly, most foods have good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. But in processed starches such as white flour, there is only bad cholesterol, and that makes you fat. The food pyramid says to eat what, 10 servings of carbohydrates a day? Starches are a main type of carbohydrate. No wonder people are getting so fat!

And supposedly the food pyramid wasn't based on any scientific research, just assumptions! How crazy is that? Well, anyway, I 'm not telling you to go on carbohydrate strike and eat all the candy you want (especially since sugar is a carbohydrate, too), but you may want to watch the amount of processed -- not natural -- starches you eat.

This is my first article, but I hope to write again,

I think that it is pretty kewl that we have started a health section for Whyvillians. Health is a very important thing for people to remember. You will always have your body, so you must treat it well.

But an even more important aspect of health than nutrition is how healthy your mind is towards yourself. You can't have a negative image towards yourself. "Much as worthy friends add to the happiness of life & value of life, we must in the main depend upon ourselves, and everyone I his own best friend or worst enemy." -- Lord Evebury.

You have to accept who you are on the inside and the outside and what you were blessed with. We all have strengths and weaknesses but you must live with both. There is absolutely no reason to go through life hating yourself. Love who you are because everyone is beautiful.

Great things to add to your diet!

First off, I am one of the many people who does not like milk! I know it's good for you and all that, but I have never enjoyed a cold glass of milk. This makes for a lack of calcium and other good stuff in my diet. If you're just like me, I have some tips!

First off, eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Bananas are great. Next, check your local grocery store for vitamin drinks. I drink Pluse -- it tastes great, it's like carbonated water. Plus it has protein, calcium, and soy.

Next, if you look at your pharmacy, you will probably find a product called Viactiv. They are little chocolates in a box that give you your needed calcium for the day, and they taste great. There are even different flavors! So ask your parents about some of these supplements, they are great and they are keeping me strong!

Editor's Note: We at the Times are not encouraging kids to take supplements or buy these products. This article was published to let you know these things are out there. If you're interested, we encourage you talk with your parents about them and do further research on their effects on folks your age.
