Whyvillians or Why Villains

He's mean. And he's dirty. He takes joy in taking your accounts. And this guy isn't afraid to admit it. According to some people, "He's Got Guts". He's been called a necessity to Whyville, while others bash him and say he should be banned, that it really is possible to stop him and all like him. He really is one low-down scum bag. His name is SkUmBaG68.

You've heard of him, right? His name has gone down in Whyville history as being the most notorious scammer/hacker out there. Well, until a new generation comes along, anyway. Just like Flower.

It seems that ever since his article entitled "The Perfect Krime" appeared in the houses of many Whyvillians in late March 2002, hacker "awareness" has risen tremendously. We know, all of a sudden, what hackers and scammers says and do. We know when they are trying to get something out of us. Apparently.

I'll tell you something right now. You aren't as smart as you think you are.

Scammers aren't always ugly. They aren't always new. They don't have to be your enemies. They don't have to be incredibly smart. Stupid people will give them what they want. They don't always announce that they scam to over 200,000 people. They don't always take more than one account. Oh, and they don't always have horrible spelling. Just the ones that are easy to catch.

You'd be surprised at the amount of people I talk to each day that I know for a fact have hacked into someone's account. I can name four right off the top of my head. Just let me think for a bit, and I know I can find more. See, there's five. And, just so as you all know, these five people are still citizens of Whyville. Most of them fairly respected. (I do pity the person who once had his password set to his own name, hey, superid?)

But that doesn't mean they did it twice. That doesn't mean that you are at risk of being hacked by them. They targeted each other. And now they are different. People grow up, sooner or later.

Have you ever heard the expression, "Great minds think alike"? Well, I like to finish the expression for people who don't know the rest: "And fools seldom differ." It doesn't take a genius to figure out how to scam half the people on Whyville.

We think we can smell hackers. We think it's possible to stop them. The ignorant leave their minds open only to what they already know. And we are all fairly ignorant in assuming that scammers and hackers do this, and scammers and hackers are like that. They're a lot closer then you think.

Talk tells, and anyone can talk. Be careful of what you know and what you don't. Because one day you'll learn.
