The Whyvillian

It was a beautiful day as Jaclyn looked out from her little boat. The waves glittering in the sunlight, the seagulls flying into the water to catch fish, and once in a while she saw a whale or two. She loved being on the ocean. She looked to her left, and saw the sun just rising for a new day. She looked to her right and saw all water. She look straight in front of her, expecting to see more water, but--

What was this? An island in the middle of nowhere? Jaclyn decided to check it out. Once she arrived at the small island, she received a warm welcome from a strange coloured parrot. She realized she had just gotten off track and was now lost, and stuck on that island until she figured out where the next island was! So she decided to make herself at home. She went to the City Hall and found someone listening to music.

"Hello," she said. "Welcome to Whyville. Do you wish to stay?"

"Yes," Jaclyn replied, looking at the poll booth and other people entering the elevator.

"Well, then, you will need these," said the City Worker, handing Jaclyn a few books, "This is a ledger to help you keep track of clams. And this is an address book in case you meet some important people."

"What are clams?" asked Jaclyn, taking the books.

The City Worker replied, "It's the currency here in Whyville. You will need clams for many things, such as to go shopping at Akbar's Mall, building a house and more. So you better just go to the Spin Lab. It's just out that way from Whyville Square," she finished, pointing out the window.

Jaclyn thanked her and headed off to the Spin Lab to do some skating. She finally finished after trying 6 times. She was really tired, so she decided to do a game that was easier.

She found a place called the SmartCars track. They lent her a car and showed her how to set it to the right way, and race on certain tracks. Finally, after a lot of practicing, she wanted to challenge someone.

"Please sign here." said a strange-looking woman behind the desk, handing Jaclyn a sheet of paper and a SmartCars guide to racing.

Later, at about lunch time, she had finished signing and needed a break from all this salary earning. So she went back to City Hall for some more help.

"Back so soon?" said the City Worker. "Did I not tell you about our safety tools? If you hear someone saying something rude, we give you some duct tape so that they can't say that to you any more for a few days." She handed Jaclyn a role of duct tape. "There are many places you can visit, including our new beach!"

"Sounds great!" said Jaclyn. "Is there anything else I missed?"

"Yes. You will have a mail box in front of your house -- but you probably don't have a house yet, do you? Just visit the Land Office in Myville, over that way," she said, pointing out the other window. "That's about it for now."

Jaclyn thanked her again and headed off to Myville. But it just so happened that Myville was "fresh out of plots" as Bob, the office keeper put it. So she had to wait a week.

Well, that's it, folks. Tune in 'Next Time' for the second part of The Whyvillian.
