The Mystery & History of the Hauntington House

Magick
Whyville Storyteller

Y-Files case #H-0045

We all know the stairs that never end, the ones that everyone seeks to discover. It's not the Y-House, or the Illusions Outside... it is Hauntington House. After several weeks of contemplation, I have come to a few conclusions about the House. Let's look at the history first -- here is what I have gathered from my own investigations in the house and Whyville.

A Foggy Beginning -- Magick's Hauntington Creation Story

Like all good buildings, Hauntington was built by a good designer. City Hall had built Hauntington originally to be a mansion that City Workers could use to get away from things. It was hidden deep within the Whyville forest so that no citizen would ever find it and disturb the stressed-out workers. The first visitor was to be City Hall herself -- however, due to Whyville business, she had to cancel and send another worker in her place. No one to this day can be sure of the name of this man, but I'll call him Sam, for now. Sam loved creepy things and Halloween, so he couldn't pass up an opportunity to stay in the middle of the woods in a creaky house.

At this point, the house wasn't complete yet, and only the main hall and kitchen were ready. However, City Hall and her carpentry team (led by Marty Buildenhammer) had started on the stairs and the second floor, and forgot to tell him that there was only one flight of 10 stairs and most of the second floor wasn't done yet. They needed more parts for a room they were working on for that floor.

Late that night, Sam was sleeping in the kitchen and woke up suddenly. He walked out into the main hall and towards that stairs, pulled by an unknown force. Slowly he stepped up them... one? two? three? four? five? six? seven? eight? nine?

That morning City Hall had some free time, and decided to start up work on the house again, and see how Sam enjoyed his stay. When they entered the kitchen, they saw the sleeping bag Sam had stayed in, and wet footprints. The sink had been leaking and Sam had stepped in the puddle of water. The footsteps went up nine stairs and they disappeared. None going down, none going up, and no sign of Sam. Now, City Hall had three questions after looking around for a while...

  1. How could the footprints stay wet for a whole night?
  2. Where did the footprints go after the ninth step?
  3. Where was Sam?

Looking around, City Hall noticed that the room they were going to finish soon on the second floor was somehow done. This room is now known as the Dark Room.

City Hall finished the house a month later and there was only the main hall, kitchen, and one flight of stairs with only nine steps, which lead to a second floor and a bedroom on the second floor. The house had several other guests in the next few years, and all of them but four disappeared. The four that made it through the night said that the light in the bedroom would never work, and they kept seeing eyes, before they ran out into the woods screaming.

Startling Discoveries

A year after Sam's disappearance some city workers who decided to hike through the woods discovered an unmarked grave near the house. City Hall thought it appropriate to mark the graves they found, and soon discovered that the house was built on an ancient cemetery. Concluding that the house was haunted, it was nicknamed Hauntington House, which was (coincidentally?) Sam's last name. City Hall has since framed pictures of those that have stayed in the house and disappeared, or made it out, and put them along the walls. She invites all citizens in for good ol' Halloween fun every year.

Theories of the Stairs

My Theory:

The stairs of Hauntington House ONLY lead to the second floor and the stairs have only nine steps. However, a portal to an alternate dimension makes the stairs have the appearance of several more. If someone continues up the stairs into the portal, they are stuck in a time-loop that only their browser can counter-act. In this dimension also lies several projectiles that Sam dropped as he wanders, trying to get out. (It makes sense that he would have these... he loves Halloween, right?)

Interviews:

Poolguy09

Me: Have you been to Hauntington House, and if so, what do you think about the stairs being ENDLESS?
Poolguy09: Sure I have, I think they're endless, there's a level 100...
Me: Why do you think that the projectiles are ONLY on the stairs and nowhere else?
Poolguy09: It's the only place for Halloween special projectiles.
Me: Do you think that there is something strange there that needs to be investigated like an alternate Whyville World?
Poolguy09: Of course! What happens after level 100 or whatever?

Cutie261

Me: Have you been to Hauntington House, and if so, what do you think about the stairs being ENDLESS?
Cutie261: Yes, I do think they're endless.
Me: Why do you think that the projectiles are ONLY on the stairs and no where else?
Cutie261: I don't know.
Me: Do you think that there is something strange there that needs to be investigated like an alternate Whyville World?
Cutie261: Not sure?

Well, it appears that no one can ever be sure. What lies beyond the top level that we've seen? Some people, like me, have only been to level 122 or so. Others have made it higher. But is there an end, and if so, what is it?
