Small Change

This is researcher Giggler01 here with today's incredible question... what happened to Adolph Hitler at the end of the second World War? Actually, I think I know the answer to that already, so that's not actually today's subject. Instead, I wanted to talk about UNICEF!

You probably Joykissed's article on UNICEF (actually, I'm just hoping you read it, I'm not certain). Anyway, I wanted to comment on some of the stuff she said, because it wasn't all accurate. I hope you won't mind. Good.

Joykissed said that a dollar would help eliminate polio. But is that all UNICEF does? Nope! It does so much more! It helps children who are living in third world countries with shelter, education, medication and many other things.

Every year my school collects money for UNICEF, and this year I learned exactly what my change does. For five cents, you are buying a child oral rehydration salts to help cure them of diarrhea. For ten cents, you are buying a child an exercise book to help them through school. If you are kind enough to give up twenty-five cents you can give three children immunization shots against the measles. If you happen to donate an extra dollar to one of these little orange boxes you are buying twenty liters of clean drinking water! (Who doesn't need that?) Two dollars (that's my little sister's weekly allowance), will buy 100 Vitamin A capsules to protect a child from blindness. Finally, 10 of my Canadian dollars will buy 30 packets of lettuce seeds for a community or school garden.

So, by raising 15 hundred dollars, Joykissed might actually be helping more then 15 hundred children. This was just a list of small things. UNICEF also helps with the HIV/AIDS crisis in Southern Africa and other tragic events.

UNICEF also sells pins around Halloween, and I usually buy a couple (some have really cool pictures). All the money from pin sales also go to the same causes. If your school sells them, why not pitch in and buy a couple??

I just wanted to let everyone know that UNICEF runs all year round, but its big campaigns run around Halloween. You can donate any time! Just go to their website to find out how! www.unicef.com

I hope you enjoy my article! This is Giggler01 going to join her dancing duck! *bobs head*
