Moans and groans can be heard for miles as the idea of going back to school crosses the minds of young people across the globe. Amidst the hustle and bustle of back-to-school shopping brings forth the idea that work, stress, and more work will be coming soon. As I am writing this, some of you have already started (yes, this article was submitted back in August!). Others are left with about one or two more weeks of summer holidays. I am not looking forward to going back, personally. But I am not writing about school for the heck of it. I have an idea, one that I hope will benefit the citizens of Whyville in a great way.

Why-School. It is a topic that has been touched on lightly, but I come prepared. The majority of kids do not have tutors, and have nowhere to turn when they need help with their schoolwork. Although parents try their best to comprehend the work, chances are they don't remember or have never done the work their child needs assistance with. What is better than having fellow students help you? Probably everyone knows about the Y-Mail Helpers and the Whyville Safety Patrol. So why don't we have a group of Whyville Tutors? Seems like a good idea to me, especially since Whyville is an educational website.

The tricky part would be finding adequate people to fill in these positions. I recommend having try-outs like those that occurred for the Safety Patrol. However, some things should be required. For example, an older student may have more knowledge and experience than a younger one. But not always. It depends on who you are talking to. Perhaps a good idea would be to have an application form that would ask for certain, safe information, like your Whyville screen-name, age, strongest subjects in school, etc. For example, I will show you an application that deals with me.

Whyville Screenname: TIKE
Location: Canada
Strongest Subjects in School: English, History, Languages, Science (Biology and Physics)
Other: I have up to Grade 10 in Core French

Do you remember the page that has the Y-Mail helpers? It could be accessed from your mailbox. Let's say we have about 5 or 6 experienced tutors. Maybe beside their Whyville face we could put the information above. Who knows, it might be quite helpful! These people would offer tips and suggestions on good study skills, work habits, etc.

This isn't etched in stone, this is just an idea or opinion that I would like to share with everyone. What do you think? Does Whyville need (or is Whyville ready) for assistance with schoolwork?

Best of luck in the upcoming (and rapidly passing) school year,
TIKE
