Have you ever gone to the Whyville beach to hang out with your friends and noticed the island that is probably 50 miles away from the shore and wondered what it was? Well, I can tell you -- it is Gothic Island.

Many Whyvillians gaze at this island with curiosity everyday wondering about this mysterious location and its history. Well, when Whyville was first claimed, the beach was a territory that belonged to Whatville (another town yet half the size of Whyville, on the other side of the island). Many Whatvillians bought land on the unnamed island. The reason was that the island was home to a vast variety of foods. The Whatvillians sold the food to their people, and a plot of land on the island went for millions of bones (bones = Whyville clams). Mansion were set up all about the small island.

The island of very strange though, because of the darkness which surrounded it 24/7, and yet it grew food like that. The assembly of Whatville named it Gothic Island.

The times seemed to grow happier and happier for Whatville -- but it was all downhill from then on. A heated debate came over the assembly and pried it apart into smaller councils. Whatville would not give me the details of what caused the assembly to storm into councils, but all this lead to their infamous "Civil Mudball War", during which the population of Whatville decreased dramatically -- some of the ones who lived during that war fled to the newly founded Whyville. Most of these people had to leave everything behind, and when an outbreak of "newbies" came about, most were teased cruelly by the upper-class of Whyville.

Finally, on July 1st, 2002, the war came to a truce. Sadly, Whatville's economy was in shambles and there were no more councils -- all the members of the councils had been killed and only 1,000 citizens survived. So, to help the economy, Whatville sold Whyville the island and the beach.

The island was different after the war and so was the beach. All of the beach resorts were destroyed, and all of Gothic Island's mansions were in ruin and rubble. City Hall sent a secret team to explore the island and found that all the vegetation was still bountiful and the animals were reproducing again.

Another secret that City Hall has just recently come out with is that some Whyvillians faces are fading! At first, they thought it was a disease, but in a top secret lab experiment, they took some of the food off of Gothic Island and gave it to patients suffering from this fading disease, and they fully recovered. Whyville's chief scientists found out the people were fading from lack of nutrients!

So, the bad news is that some mysterious new bacteria in Whyville is causing Whyvillians to need nutrients or fade away. This is why Whyville called in Operation GIF (Gothic Island Food), and will have collected lots of food that will arrive (we hope) shortly.
