Whyville is ever changing, and always growing. Although City Hall's announcement of a Whyville Senate last week is a very welcomed development with a more interactive "government", I wonder whether this will become a popularity contest or if it will really be a true election to decide the most suitable Representative for our choices as a public. I'm sure many will run for this position. It should prove interesting to see if we pick the most popular candidate or the most qualified candidate. It should be duly noted that we are basically a colony of teenagers, centered around socialization and creativity. And, yes -- although we're known to only want to hang out at the mall, scarf pizza and scope out guys or gals depending on who we may be, we do want to have a voice in decision-making.

In past months, the so-called Whyville Government has become passe, perhaps even forgotten. Petitions were hardly considered unless major changes brought about lots of angry citizens. Maybe this was all because our opinions were outlandish or farfetched, so perhaps it was for our own good. All of this is in the past now, and since it's often said not to worry about the past -- here goes.

Our culture, our people, our tastes and dislikes are what make Whyville unique to any country in the real world. However, just like real countries, we have real citizens. Real people behind the screen, with real opinions, real thoughts, and real emotions. Finally, we have the choice to elect one of ourselves as Senator. I wonder why City Hall chose the term Senator when the responsibility will be as great as though we are electing a President or Prime Minister. Whatever the case may be, it our turn to be heard. Editor's Note: If all goes well, there will be several Senators in the future... this person will just be the First Senator!

Throughout the history of our town, we have undergone many changes. The "Pick your Nose Engine" (is Engine the correct term?!) has been updated several times. We have had parties and celebrations galore. We've learned a variety of sciences, undergone our own disease, and yes -- we survived it all. There is no doubt in my mind that we will survive this new event, just as we have all the others. The choice is now up to you, fair citizens of Whyville, to elect the most suitable Senator.

Who should wear this hat? Or shall I say Wig? It's up to us to decide. We can choose the most popular partier who has about as much intelligence as the chair you're sitting on, or we can choose a mature, smart, and compassionate representative. It's up to us as a whole... and as I understand it, whomever we decide upon will relay our opinions to City Hall, and represent us in decision-making. Now, who do you want the party guy/girl -- or the intelligent, persuasive representative?

One last point before I close: this is the opportunity for a GIRL to lead us. And the opportunity for a GUY to lead us. What I'm saying is, this is our chance to break the molds and have our very own Madeleine Albright -- or George W. Bush. Remember, just because the people in real life leading us may be men doesn't mean it has to be that way here!

It could be any one of us... and it will be.

Editor's Note: No offense meant to Madeleine, but I'm hoping you folks dream bigger when you think of politicians to emulate: G.W. doesn't have the same historic impact as, say, a Roosevelt, Jefferson, or King, Jr... and that's just the American side of things! Who else broke the political mold and made people's lives better, intellectually or physically, idealistically or practically?
