Have you ever noticed that when you go
to Pick Your Nose, or a
chat
room, it starts with a gray screen that says it's "loading Java
applets"? I love technology, and wondered how Java works and how
it affected Whyville. From what I have seen, it is a vital piece of
Whyville's servers.
JavaScript is created by a
company called Sun Microsystems. Java is a type of programming language
that translates a program's commands into something called Java
ByteCodes, then sends it to something called an interpreter that runs
the ByteCode on your computer. Basically what it does is help
programmers program something once, and it runs on all computers (such
as Macs, Linux, Solaris, and Windows machines). The main part of Java
that we see is the Interface, or main program. Sometime you are on
Whyville, look near your clock and you may see a tiny, tiny coffee cup
that is red, white, and blue. That is the Interface.
I can now understand why Whyville uses
Java. It works on any
computer, any language, no
questions asked. It makes Whyville accessable to all Operating Systems.
I don't know, but maybe it speeds up the servers a bit. Anywho, it
makes Whyville better for us and our computers.
I hope that this gave you a
