Viruses are foreign cells that invade an animal's body. Viruses depend on the animal cells that they infect to reproduce; they cannot reproduce without a cell.

When a virus comes into contact with an animal cell, a virus puts its genetic material into the cell, hijacking its control system. An infected cell produces more viruses instead of its usual products. When a virus goes into the cell, it takes over, spills out all its viruses into the host and spreads. The virus survives, but the host may not.
