The Last Frontier: The Rest!
Well, it's
hard to believe, but this is the last edition of The Last Frontier! I
have a lot of websites to thank, so I'll just say Thank You, hehe.
METEORS, METEORITES, COMETS, STARS, THE ASTEROID BELT, AND
THE MILKY WAY
Meteors and Metorites:
Meteors are also known as shooting or falling stars. They look
like this as they burn up falling through Earth's atmophere. Meteorites
happen if
the meteor is big enough to get all the way through and hit the
Earth's ground!
Comets and Stars:
Comets are compounds of ice, water, and dirt. As they get closer
to the sun, they start to melt and leave behind a trail of boiled-off
water, which is why comets look like they have tails.
Stars are burning balls of gas. There are BILLIONS and BILLIONS of
stars, but the closest one is the sun. Stars come in clusters,
that appear to us as constellations, like the Big and Little Dippers,
Leo, Cancer, etc.
The Asteroid Belt:
The asteroid belt is a band of asteroids like a big ring around
the sun, found between Mars and Jupiter. There are lots of theories
about where it came from, including the idea that it may have been
a small planet that somehow exploded.
The Milky Way:
The Milky Way is the galaxy of stars that our solar system is in. Here
is a very clear picture of the Milky Way, taken by the COBE satellite:
