We've all tried our luck in the face factory once or twice (some of us, like me, with little or no luck. :P) But many of us had one major problem: Fairly primitive tools for creating face parts.

More advanced tools could make for faster and easier designing of face parts, as well as more complicated designs and realistic looking face parts. But should our Face Factory be updated?

At first thought, I bet your answer would be "obviously!" However, upon deeper reflection, you may just reconsider. With a more advanced Face Factory, just about any idiot could make a decent face part. But what about all our dedicated designers many who spent over a year practicing and developing their techniques so they could be as successful as they are? With a more advanced Face Factory, a newbie who's never designed a face part in their lives could come out with a fabulous part simply because of the advanced Face Factory. Would this insult Whyville's most prized designers? Or would the new Factory just make their job easier?

Baffled, I went to the experts to find out. Here are what some top designers have to say to the question:

Shmee: "I totally don???t think they should update it. You are right, a lot of designers have spent over a year developing their technique. And I for one wasn't very good when I started out. So if they did update it, I would be very angry. "

Sonner: "I think yes and no. I've been putting up lots of petitions asking for a clear button in the face factory too. We don't have small erasers to erase a big project. Besides the clear button. I would most likely say no. People in the real world build from scratch and turn it into a masterpiece. It takes practice. My early parts stunk. LoL. Plus, if you zoom in on your face part and take your time and make sure every line is perfect then it will most likely look good."

Girlyleo: "I don't think I'll be any help on this because I'm for both. I like how it is right now because it makes Whyville original and special. On the other hand, if we had better tools and more colors there are so many more, or even better designs that we could make." Editor???s Note: Actually, the palette has all the colors you can use on the internet -- a web palette has many fewer colors than a real-life picture does! Ever wonder why?

Porche13: "I think the face factory is fine the way it is??? One thing I would like to see changed is a delete button so designers can decide when to stop selling a part on their own, and take it out of their inventory. When you have a lot of parts to restock it takes along time and it would be nice to be able to delete your unsellables. Advice for new designers is to start small and keep practicing, once you get used to the size of thins it gets easier, really it does."

- Summary -

The designers seem to agree that the Face Factory is fine just the way it is, with the exception of a few things, like a clear button and a way to stop selling a specific part, or maybe even a few more colors. However, it is clear that they feel the overall structure of the Face Factory should not be changed.

Thanks to Shmee, Sonner, Girlyleo, and Porche13 for their help on this article!

Signin??? off and goin??? to bed,
