When the original Senate race began, City Hall said that in the future there would also be more Senators. When this was mentioned again, I started thinking about my campaign. And I started thinking about the kind of person I would vote for. If you're a Senate hopeful then I'd like to offer a bit of advice that will help you on your way.

Most importantly: BE FRIENDLY. Go out and meet all kinds of people! I suggest that you visit events such as the Media Hour, Friday Night Trivia and the occasional Writer's Workshop. The people who visit these are very friendly and love to talk. It's important to realize that newbies, oldies, rich and poor citizens all have equal views in Whyville. When I ran my campaign, I strove to not neglect any groups of people, and that has helped me because when I am thinking about issues, I try to make sure everyone is included. You will not get elected if you are mean to people, even if it's just a few.

GET INVOLVED. Before the Senator position was ever announced, I was a Times Writer and had just recently won the Summer Staff contest. (I should finish those articles the Times Editor assigned me, now that I mention it....) I was also a finalist in the poet laureate contest. I was a Why-mail helper and a Safety Patroller. I had even designed a few face parts. A lot of people in Whyville had heard of me, and I'd helped a lot of people, so I was a familiar face. Get involved now and it will pay off later! (This sort of brings to mind the governor of California, doesn't it?)

ACCESS YOUR ALLIES. If you know people who can help you out, then ask for help. It's not humanly possible to be on Whyville 24/7, but if you have people supporting you and your campaign, then you can spread your message effectively and constantly. I was fortunate enough to have three very dedicated people assisting me, and this also helped me get to know these people. To spread your message, there are two things I suggest: The first is to spend time in chat rooms so that you can tell people that you're running for Senator. The second is to mail people. I mailed anyone and everyone that I could find. I would go into a chat room and mail the first person I saw. This method was effective, and while it also meant that a lot of people replied to me, it gave me a chance to give well thought-out answers.

After reading these suggestions, I hope you see that if you get involved now and find ways to meet people, it will help you out a lot. These things are important because they show dedication to Whyville -- no matter who the next Senators will be, they need to be dedicated. Good luck!
