Hi, I'm Hand11. You probably know that there are many different cultures around the world. But out of having different cultures around, bad things can happen-- what I mean by "bad things" is racism, and discrimination. Racism is a very bad thing, and believe it or not it happens right here in Whyville!

You may have noticed African-Americans, or black people (because not everybody's from America in Whyville!), in this wonderful community we have. Here is what some citizens of Whyville think about the issues they face.

Kirbie393: I think that, while there isn't as much racism in Whyville as there used to be, it's alive and well. I'm actually not sure that people know they're being racist. It may very well just be an honest mistake. But you can 'walk' into almost store in Akbar's and see all-white clothes. But then again, is this the reason most people on Whyville choose to have a white cartoon? Or do they choose to be white simply because they like it? I could give other examples, but I really don't want to offend anyone. Sorry!

myachild: I think it's horrible. If anyone says something that is racist and hurts someone, they should get reported and duck-taped for at least a week! That's just what I think.

Boo44: What do I think of racism? Well, it's very hard to sum up all my feelings about it into one y-mail. First of all, IT IS WRONG! I live in a small community where there is close to no racism in it, so luckily I can't really say anything from a personal experience. At the moment, the discrimination I hear most about is religious discrimination, mostly about Muslims and more of the eastern ethnic groups. It pains me to see people stereotyping groups of people and being prejudicee. One of my most favorite poems ever is by Shel Silverstein -- it talks about what the world would be like if god would just turn out the light. It's called "NO DIFFERENCE" -- look it up online!?? The poem shares my exact thoughts on racism and judging people. No matter what the skin color, religion or values... look past that!

4elllvr: Hey, I hate racism, and I think that just because everyone one has different color skin, it doesn't mean that they're from a different universe or anything.

Thank you, Whyvillians, for those wonderful comments!  I agree with what you guys are saying!

I also had an interview with Jazzydaz, an African-American on Whyville, and here is what she had to say:

Hand11: Do people tease you about your race, or make fun of you?
Jazzydaz: Sometimes.
Hand11: Do people treat you differently than others?
Jazzydaz: Yes.
Hand11: Any additional comments?
Jazzydaz: That we shouldn't start Whyville with a white face as a newbie, we should have a choice!

I had a lot of fun interviewing Jazzydaz and I think her additional comment would be a good start for a petition!

My fingers are starting to hurt... this is Hand11, logging out.
