You have probably seen at least one female in Whyville wearing facial hair, right? I know I've seen many. Two of my good friends around Whyville, penny305 and mnm1208, not only wear beards on their faces, but have dedicated an entire club to it!

This club is called BLOBY: Bearded Lady Organization for a Better Y-Ville. I talked to penny305, the founder and member, and mnm1208, a member, to find out the scoop on this interesting new idea.

Sheronda: What are you and BLOBY all about?
Penny305: We are about diversity, and stepping away from stereotypes. Who cares what other Whyvillians say? Beauty is in your soul, not your face. It is about people not judging you by your physical appearance. Beards can't change who you are inside.
Mnm1208: We can have facial hair and still be who we are.

Sheronda: What inspired you to start BLOBY?
Mnm1208: I'll let Penny answer that.
Penny305: I was originally inspired by Hanni319 (Author's Note: Hanni319 is the author of "Unibrows and Bearded Ladies" from the Times issue of May 22, 2004. Editor's Note: And I think BabyPowdr started it all in March 20's "This Rainbow Has Got a Beard." :-) to get a beard, but the idea of BLOBY was inspired by people's reactions to my look. I thought getting more people involved would make a bigger statement.

Sheronda: Do you get laughed at?
Penny305: Not many people laugh at me, but there are other insulting reactions. One night at Club Why, mnm1208 and I were called "manladies" and "he/shes" and other names like that. Most people think it's gross or abnormal, not funny. I try to ignore them because I know who I am, and I don't need other people to judge me.
Mnm1208: A LOT, we get called shemales and heshes... you get used to it. But there are some people who are very nice about it.

Sheronda: What do you hope to accomplish in BLOBY?
Penny305: Open up people's minds, and remind everyone that beauty is more than just skin deep. Even if we stay just the small club we are it would still be great to inspire some people.
Mnm1208: We hope to have people just talk to you like normal people, no matter how weird you look or how much hair is on your face.

I hosted a beauty contest the day of the interview that penny305 and mnm1208 participated in. The experiment was to see people's reactions when I picked mnm1208 for 1st place and penny305 for 2nd (both with beards). This is what they had to say about it.

Sheronda: What were some comments at the fake beauty contest?
Penny305: "EEEEEWWW A BEARDED LADY BEAT ME?!" and "She shouldn't have won, she's not very pretty."
Mnm1208: "EEEEW a SHE-MALE beat us."

Sheronda: Were there any nice comments at the beauty contest?
Penny305: I don't know who said it, but someone wanted to join BLOBY. Most everyone was surprised and disgusted though.
Mnm1208: Someone was very glad that I won.

As you can see, penny305 and mnm1208 are proud of their organization, which is growing every day.

Penny305 is welcoming new members with open arms, both women and men. If you would like to join the Bearded Lady Organization, please send penny305 a y-mail. If you support the BLOBY principles, I'm sure she would be delighted to have you as a member.
