Hello my fellow Whyvillians! Today I wanted to talk with you about America's
Birthday! a.k.a. July 4th, Independence Day! It's like Canada Day (July 1) for
all you Canadians out there, except it's for us Americans. It's basically a day of
celebration, gathering, parades, parties, BBQs, and, best of all...
FIREWORKS!!! (In most places, fireworks are illegal, so they're left up to the
professionals. =)
But does anyone know exactly why Independence Day is the most important holiday
for us Americans? Yep, you guessed it. It celebrates the Declaration of
Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
On that day,
a group of the North American colonists of Great Britain declared they were
tired of paying really high taxes to the home country (among a lot of other
things they also didn't like). More and more colonists were thinking of plans to
help them be
able to make their own rules. A group the colonists got together and decided to tell
Great Britain they were becoming their own independent country. The Congress met
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and appointed a committee. The committee asked
Thomas Jefferson to write a draft of a document, and for three days he worked in
absolute silence. The draft was completed on July 2, 1776, and the final document
was written July 4, 1776. Congress
began signing the 'official' document on August 2, 1776, and in January
1777, Congress sent signed copies to all of the states.
