You all have figured out by now that there is a new rule for the Whyville Adobe Photo Contest -- and if you haven't heard, here it is: Your photo must include the front page of a recent newspaper. The headlines must be legible enough for us to read.

Well, now we all have to be super creative!

I recently took a picture of my dog for this very contest. After doing quite a bit of thinking for that photo, I felt I could share some helpful tips based on my efforts.

1. Groom your pet, comb their hair, and give them a bath if it's necessary. You know what I mean -- make them look nice before taking the picture.

2. (This particular tip really helps for cats and dogs.) Trying to take the picture of animal by force can be very difficult. I have tried -- it does not work well, they just don't look as cute. But if you find them at time when they're relaxed, like on their pillow or in someone's bed, it's a good time to snap that shot! Then they're not as rambunctious. (Please don't wake up your animal -- that's cruel.)

3. Now you have to figure out how you are going to fit the newspaper in. You just need the front page to be visible, so people can read the headlines. Just take the front page, not the whole paper. Put it in a place where it looks like it belongs in the environment.

4. Get a treat your pet really likes. Hold it or have someone hold it where you want the animal to stare while you snap your pictures. Every few pictures, reward your pet with a small treat. This will make your pet want to stick around during the photographs. At the end, when you get the picture you want, give your animal a few small treats or one big one, because they have been so good.

5. Make your picture into a file (however that works, depending on your camera). You may have to log in a few times until the Adobe box comes up in the welcome screen when you first log in to Whyville so you can enter you photo. Or you can come to the Times and use the link in the "Pics Your Pets & Paper!" article.

I hope my tips helped, and please don't hurt your animals just for a good picture.

This is ZuBz saying bye, and wishing good luck to all in the contest!!!
