"And the next Canadian Idol is... the one and only... KALAN PORTER!"
Boy, does Ben Mulroney (the host of "Canadian Idol") know how to build
up the
suspense! I was waiting with baited breath for the results of
the final vote back on September 16.
Anyway, for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, I will
lay it out for you. I'm talking about the show that took Canada by
storm this summer: "Canadian Idol".
I'm sure that most of you Canadians were watching, and probably even
some Americans, too. But for those of you who don't know, "Canadian
Idol"
is one of the many reality television shows out there. It is like "Pop
Idol," "American Idol," "World Idol" and all the other Idol shows in
this
world (I believe). This show was hugely popular in Canada all summer.
Honestly, I
wasn't a big fan of the show at the beginning, but by the last few
weeks, I was an avid Kalanadian (that's what Kalan Porter fans
call themselves).
Here are a few stats on the winner, 18-year-old Kalan Porter:
Hometown: Medicine Hat, Alberta
Audition City: Edmonton,Alberta
Occupation: Student at
Medicine Hat College
Musical Style: Rock/Christian
Rock (And man! Is he a rocker at heart or
what?)
Nickname: "Jake"
A few of the songs he sang for the show include "Born to Be Wild,"
"House of the Rising Sun," "If
You Could Read My Mind," "Nature Boy," "I Can Only Imagine" and "Awake
In A
Dream."
According to the official "Canadian Idol" website, Kalan's mother says
that he was able to hum Brahm's Lullaby at 18-months-old. Kalan plays
guitar, bass, piano, violin and viola. Kalan grew up working on his
family's buffalo/cattle ranch, which goes back five generations, and at
16, he began
playing in his family's rock band, SWASS. Kalan once broke both his
wrists snowboarding and played in a
major violin competition two weeks after the casts came off, according
to his best friend.
Kalan has now signed a recording contract with BMG
(a perk of winning!) and has a CD due out October 5. (I will be buying
it the first day it is out!)
