Aspartame or NutraSweetTM, EqualTM and SpoonfullTM can all be very dangerous -- these are just some of the names of the sugar replacement known as aspartame.

According to my research, aspartame can be very dangerous. For example, when it exceeds the temperature of 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in it coverts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which can cause metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of red fire ants. Formaldehyde is what they used to use to embalm dead creatures so they could be dissected by scientists and students, until they realized it's really unhealthy for living creatures.

Aspartame has a tendency to break down and produce methanol (that wood alcohol I mentioned earlier), which is toxic on its own. If you get "methanol toxicity" from having way too much aspartame can make it seem like you have multiple sclerosis -- this, one scientist says, means that some people are dignosed with having multiple sclerosis when they don't actually have it. Multiple sclerosis won't kill you, but methanol toxicity can.

Methanol breaks down further, too, creating formic acid and formaldehyde. Phenylalanine can be another product of aspartame -- it is also very dangerous for people with phenyketonuria, what my sources said is a very common enzyme deficiency. (See the bottom of my article for links.)

Aspartame can also cause migranes (very bad headaches). Aspartame also can break down to diketopiperazine, or DKP, which has been proven to cause brain tumors! My sources say aspartame can cause blindness, seizures, chronic fatigue, hypertension (high blood pressure) and loss of memory... those few things don't even make a stab at how dangerous aspartame is, they say. Aspartame can visit a plague of 92 symptoms listed by the FDA on you -- but the FDA hasn't blocked aspartame from use in the United States. Editor's Note: If the FDA hasn't stopped the use of this stuff, can it be so bad? Or is the government making a mistake?

According to the International Center for Nutritional Research, in 1969, Dr. Harry Waismon conducted a experiment about aspartame. He took seven newborn monkeys and put aspartame in the milk that these monkeys drank. Within 300 days of recieving the milk, one monkey died while five of them developed seizures.

There are over 5,000 products that contian aspartame.

It may take years to kill a person, but aspartame very much can do it. It causes all types of neurological problems. It changes the chemistry in your brain and that's the reason for the severe seizures some people are believed to have developed because of aspartame. Imagine what aspartame is doing to people who suffer from Parkinson's disease or epilepsy. Aspartame can also cause birth defects. It can cause blood pressure to go out of control and cause people to go into coma. This is what my sources say, at least.

Aspartame is most commonly found in diet sodas, popsicles, and other "sugar free" food.

Editor's Note: That last link looks like the best one -- like most products, it says, folks should eat aspartame in moderation. That means, don't chug the Diet Coke, but don't panic if you do drink it every so often. If you're worried, ask your doctor... and in the meantime, keep reading and writing to the Times about what you discover about aspartame and everything else under the sun!
