The average American teenager watches 3-5 hours of television per day. That's more than the time they spend learning in school.

So why in the world aren't ya'll watching the Media Hour shows?

On December 4, NO ONE at Media Hour could honestly say they watched a single show from the Wiz's column. Barely anyone (me and a few other girls) had watched anything even remotely similar to the topic. We had rented "Supersize Me!", a documentary about what fast food can do to your body, and the Media Hour's topic was "healthy eating".

So how come if you watch a few hours of TV a day, and MediaWiz is kind enough to pick out nine or more QUITE different genres of shows, why don't you don't watch the shows of the week?

I've listed common excuses and busted them.

1) SCHEDULE ("I wasn't home when the shows were on") -- I'm not the only one who was busy every single day of the week, barely putting in my school hours while running from downtown to the suburbs. A few of my activities have ended since then, but this problem is so simple... RECORD! It's a great solution. Record the shows on the days you are most busy, then watch 'em on a day not so filled with stuffs.

2) BORING -- This excuse is pitiful. I've heard some people say that the shows MediaWiz picks out are boring. Well, how could you know that until you watch one? Hmmm! Maybe you don't like one, but there are several new ones to choose from every week. Editor's Note: The MediaWiz would love to hear from you when you really have seen any of the shows and can tell us which ones you've liked and which ones you haven't. You might even get some clams out of it, or write a great article for the Times!

3) I FORGOT -- The forgetful type, eh? Well, how about you draw up a list of all the shows, and then scotch tape it on your TV? Or maybe give the list to your mom or dad and have them tell you when it's time to change channels. I'm quite certain they won't object, since you'll be learning while you watch! ;D

4) SCHOOLWORK -- Maybe you are home-schooled like me and sometimes wait a bit before starting. Or perhaps you lugged home three homework assignments. Try doing it earlier! You'll be able to watch the shows and eat supper in peace without your parents nagging you to do your work. Whoopee!

5) I DON'T WANT TO -- This is by far the worst excuse, though I admire the honesty and directness of the people use this one. So, why don't you want to, then? Afraid of actually expanding your mind and learning something instead of letting it fry watching the latest "That's So Raven"? You don't want to go far in life, making mucho moola and being respected by your juniors and seniors? You want to make MediaWiz sad? :'( Well, whatever floats your boat.

I hope my article has perhaps shifted your perspective a bit, given you a reason to take another look at the Media Menu shows. I look forward to seeing you shout, "I WATCHED THE SHOWS!" at the next Media Hour where we cross paths.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Editor's Note: If you need more motivation to watch the shows, try this: Write a good review of any of the Media Menu shows, and you'll have a hugely good chance of getting published in the Times!
