PANDEMIC

A while ago I wrote a job description and asked my fellow Whyvillians to decide what part of a cell would be most qualified for that job. It didn't strike me until now how many different answers I got. I decided that it would be better to share some of the cell parts now, than not at all.

-On the outside of all cells is the cell membrane. It protects the cells from harmful bacteria and lets needed food in.

-Just inside the cell membrane on plant cells there is a cell wall which provides both structure and protection.

-Inside cells there are lysosomes. Lysosomes attach to substances that need to be digested and, what else, digest them.

-Mitochondria are also inside a cell and provide energy.

-Endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes on it and ribosomes are what synthesize protein.

-Afterwards they send this to the Golgi Bodies. Golgi Bodies were the answer to my ad and they are responsible for packaging protein.

-Chloroplasts are also just in plant cells. They contain a green pigment called chlorophyll and this is what turns leaves green. This is also where photosynthesis takes place.

-At the center of the whole cell is the nucleus. The nucleus is surrounded by several membranes, and is the brain of the cell.

-There is also a storing organelle called a vacuole. The vacuole stores food that needs to be digested.

-All the rest of the space inside a cell is taken up by a jelly-like substance called cytoplasm.

For being so small cells are very complex. They make up everything living in our world, from plants to animals to humans. If you look at an onion with a drop of dark food coloring on it with a microscope that is powerful enough you can see the cells. Try to see the little black dots inside them. This is a nucleus. That is about the only thing you can see. If you have a microscope I encourage you to try this.

Going to buy more onions,
