Not only is Whyville about learning and meeting new people, but it is also about making real friendships. Derrick is one of those people who you can just get along with and stay friends with for a long time. Everybody knows that friends like that are difficult to find, even in real life.

Of course, no one is perfect. Maybe he isn't best friends with everyone on Whyville. However, when he meets a new friend on Whyville, he is nice and open to new relationships and companionships.
