"The Revolution"

This episode of the historical documentary series about the American Revolution begins with the outbreak of war at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The series, airing weekly in this timeslot until August 13 tells the story from the roots of the Revolution to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, victory at Yorktown to the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. Much of the series is filmed on the locations where history was made, from Fort Ticonderoga in the North to Charleston in the South Through re-enactments, the keystone events and the complex relationships among the principal players such as Thomas Paine, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin are shown. It also looks at the full range of individuals who shaped the conflict -- unsung heroes including spies, slaves, free Africans, Indian sympathizers, emancipated women and eccentric personalities -- in order to illuminate how the historic ideas and themes drove these people to commit treasonous acts against the British crown because they believed that independence was a cause worth dying for. Often messy, chaotic, and on the brink of failure, the two decades of American history chronicled in the series demonstrate how a nation built on ideas of freedom took root, and how it was not a job for the faint of heart. In this particular episode rebellion escalates into war with the Battle at Bunker Hill. The Continental Congress establishes an army and appoints George Washington as Commander-in-Chief. But Washington faces nearly insurmountable obstacles in turning the motley militias into a battle-ready army. When the Continental Army surrounds British troops that occupy Boston, Britain sends additional troops and its three best generals--William Howe, John Burgoyne, and Henry Clinton--to take over command in the insurgent colonies. The Continental assault from Dorchester Heights forces the British and Loyalists to evacuate the city. TVPG Available on DVD.

"NOVA: Saving the National Treasures"

Every year, more than a million people visit the Rotunda at the National Archives in Washington to gaze at three documents that define our nation's heritage: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. But these touchstones of democracy are in serious trouble. The ink is flaking from parchments that are already badly faded, while the glass casements built to exhibit them are disintegrating. To head off the danger, the Archives embarked on a five-year project to design state-of-the-art encasements and a new rotunda. This documentary goes behind-the-scenes access to this unique project from start to finish. The result is a brilliant evocation of the colorful history of these documents and an insider's look at the extraordinary engineering efforts that are safeguarding America's equivalent of the Crown Jewels. "The Fog Of War"

Many documentaries these days present history "lite". This one presents it "full strength". Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Errol Morris, and winner of the 2004 Best Documentary Oscar, this interview-film featuring Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, gives a uniquely unsettling viewpoint on much of 20th-century American history. Employing a ton of archival material, Morris probes the reasons behind the U.S. commitment to the Vietnam War. McNamara himself emerges as clearly haunted by the what-ifs of Vietnam. He also mulls the bombing of Japan in World War II and the Cuban Missile Crisis, raising more questions than he answers. TVPG. Available on DVD
