I'm sure many of you watch MTV daily, but did you realize that they are about more than just the music? Recently MTV has started a new campaign called "Break the Addiction". And no, it isn't about not smoking, although that is another big don't, but this is about breaking America's addiction to unclean living.

We all know that global warming is a threat to our environment and the world we live in. But what is global warming anyway? Global warming is defined as "the observed increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans in recent decades."

Through MTV you can learn whether or not your lifestyle is harming the environment, the long term effects of your actions, and what you can do to stop it. Many of you know that in January of this year President Bush announced in his State of the Union Address that "Americans are addicted to oil". But did you know that Americans represent 4% of the world's population and yet we consume 25% of the world's energy. That's a lot of energy for how little people. Every day Americans make decisions that will ultimately affect the greater state of the world. Even the little things matter.

I bet you didn't think that taking longer showers, leaving the water run while you brush your teeth, leaving the lights on when you're not in the room, and charging your cell phone all night can harm the environment. Well they do. Our every day lives revolve around the use of non-renewable energy sources to heat the water we use to take a shower, to heat our homes in the winter, and to make our cars go. The use of these energy sources has begun to harm the environment at an alarming rate. But before you get too upset, the damage is reversible.

There are many things that we can do to stop global warming. And most of it involves every day, simple choices. By decreasing the amount of energy we use the world will get a chance to start to heal.

If you are interested in reading more on the affect we have on global warming, getting involved, or improving your lifestyle, check with your parents and then visit www.think.mtv.com/environment.

Thanks for taking time out to change the world,
