Hey, HurryHide or Scooter here! Recently, a live giant squid was photographed in the North Pacific Ocean. Earlier in the year, a documentary was showed on Discovery Channel called "Big Science: Giant Squid Caught on Camera". This was about the film capturing of the giant squid. Perhaps you've read Jules Vern's classic Science Fiction novel, "20000 Leagues Under the Sea". That's about a giant squid. I don't know about you, but I find the subject of a giant squid fascinating. I wanted to learn more about them so, I thought we could learn together.

The one in the picture below is roughly 25 feet long. This is the first live filming of a giant squid.

The picture was taken by a high-tech underwater camera at nearly 3000 feet under water. The pressure at that rate would kill any normal human being. The scientists say that they took over 500 pictures before the squid broke free from the hook it was caught on. He latched on to the bait squid they put at the end of the hook.

The giant squid is a deep sea dweller that can grow to the size of a bus. Imagine running over that coming home from school.

Giant squid are carnivorus Mollusks. They have five pairs of long arms, one of which are longer and thinner to be used for capturing food. It's beak-like mouth can cut through steel and it's eye, the largest in the animal kingdom, can grow as large as 18 inches across.

Giant Squid and Sperm Whales seem (to me ) to be mortal enimies. I'm always reading stories about them getting in fights and eating each other. I think that's sort of cool in a dark way.

I hope this was cool! I sure liked learning about it. If you have anyquestions, you can y-mail me or go to the websites I used, www.nationalgeographic.com and www.unmuseum.mus.pa.us/squid.htm.

Thanks,
HurryHide *~*
