And on that day we left childhood behind,
A picture with a shattered frame,
With rusted hinges, and it's edges torn
And I simply wondered,
"Who put out the flame?"

We were no more than sleepy kids,
Thrown under blankets of questions
To which everyone wants an answer,
When I'd have rather kept quiet

And on that day my clothes fell off,
The beater on my back was all that held,
With tattered shorts and shoes to match
A fabric heart that knew no design

But with the tears and cuts I smiled,
Because I knew you'd be my mender,
As we drew our cares away
In the etch-a-sketch
Of tan-brown specks
The adults saw nothing in

And on that day I promised, dear,
That you'd be the one I would hold near;
So take the pains and write 'em down,
I'll explain to you why we shouldn't frown

I never knew we'd grow so fast,
And rationalize our dreams away,
Like Einsteins of a whole new age,
With minds that work overtime,
For no rewards or extra pay

I wish we'd held hands, fingers laced,
Like all the others whom I never knew,
The couples who only saw glimpses
Of a world without direction,
Of the world we've always known

And on that day...
The horizon came closer;
My arms spread wide to meet it,
With eyes open to the limit,
As if I'd see more than I'd seen before

But as we walk through danger,
I'll carry you over the glass
And gaps the birds could never clear,
With no regrets or any fears

If we ever jump high enough,
We might one day disappear,
And with its only lovers gone,
The sky would run away
With all its tints and shades,
Leaving behind its days of gray-
The kind we'd hide our faces from,
The kind we all become in time

And on that day our souls grew old,
While our faces met no change;
But now a new muse sings to me,
The songs of who I'm meant to be

Cryptic flutes hang their tunes to dry,
Blown about by the stinging gales,
That fade in whispers as we say farewell

And 'til the day we are no more,
I'll be your shield no matter what,
I'll be the weapon you'll always wield,
And I'll protect you as the horizons charge

Today we're more than children,
Hold on tight, they're almost here...
