Good evening fellow Whyvillians! Isn't it funny how with everything in Whyville and in real life, there are always mixed comments and feelings towards them? Well, today, I would like to bring up Y-mail Helpers, and the things that come along with that. I know a lot of y-mail helpers read the Times, and as the same for Newbies.

For some, (if you already aren't a helper), they want to become one desperately, and wish for the 90 days of no taping to be up to take the test. For others, they couldn't care less. But, what happens when you actually become one? Well, I decided to interview a few Y-mail Helpers to see what they thought, and if the wait is really worth it.

First was Vancyon (Zach)

xoTiaox: About how long have you been a Y-mail Helper?
Vancyon: Hmm . . . I'd say I first took the test in 2005. But that test was a y-mail test. It wasn't until 6-8 months later (when the automatic test restarted) I got the privilege to be one.
xoTiaox: Do you ever get annoyed when the bell rings constantly, from the same Whyvillian while you are chatting with one of your friends?
Vancyon: YES! YES! YES! The obvious answer is . . . and with 5 rooms, 5 people could be ringing the bell constantly. I almost never catch friend finders!
xoTiaox: What are the ups and downs of being a Y-mail Helper?
Vancyon: The Ups . . . I get to help Newbies, I can sit at the desk, I can invite, and I am listed on the helper page almost everyday, usually at the top. The Downs . . . There are so many helpers now! The desk is always full with stubborn helpers that have almost no experience in Whyville, with tiny 75-100 salaries. Sure. 100 used to be a lot. But now, more and more salary games can be played in Whyville, and it's easy with these cheat sites on Whyville. Cheat Sites= Bad! -- Off topic -- Another down, is the bell, the last down is that there are so many helpers, that the real quality helpers (such as holiday50) get blocked out by all the people fresh out of the Newbie Center.
xoTiaox: Do you feel that Y-mail Helpers should be given more credit for what they do?
Vancyon: Not anymore.
xoTiaox: And lastly, do you have any advice for the soon-to-be-Y-mail-Helpers?
Vancyon: Yes. Try to learn more about Whyville, as much as you can. That's exactly what I did.

I then interviewed Holiday50 (funny how Zach mentioned her . . .)

xoTiaox: About how long have you been a Ymail Helper?
Holiday50: I've been a Y-mail Helper since June 2006.
xoTiaox: Do you ever get annoyed when the bell rings constantly, from the same Whyvillian while you are chatting with one of your friends?
Holiday50: Yes, I do get annoyed. Y-mail helpers see the bell the first time it rings, and the Whyvillian should be patient and wait for a Y-mail helper to come.
xoTiaox: What are the ups and downs of being a Y-mail Helper?
Holiday50: The positives of being a Y-mail helper, is that you feel glad when you help a Whyvillian. When I joined Whyville, we didn't have a Newbie Center and it was really hard to learn everything on your own. The negatives, are that we're really disrespected by Whyvillians. We're treated like free banks, and people think we'll give away face parts and clams when they ask. Y-mail helpers teach you to earn clams; we don't give them to you. Also, sometimes people climb on our faces, block what we're saying, swear at us, and distract us while we try and help. We're volunteering our time to help other people, and we deserve more respect, not less.
xoTiaox: Do you feel that Y-mail Helpers should be given more credit for what they do?
Holiday50: No, I don't. The credit we're given now, is just fine. But, I think there should be a Y-mail Helper rating system where the City Workers rate Y-mail Helpers. That way, Whyvillians know which Helpers are better than others.
xoTiaox: And lastly, do you have any advice for the soon-to-be-Y-mail-Helpers?
Holiday50: Yes I do. The Y-mail Helper test doesn't even come close to asking the questions that people ask us. Anyone who passes the test should learn more about Whyville before they start helping. Also if you're thinking of becoming a Helper, then watch some Y-mail Helpers in the Newbie Center. You'll learn a lot of things you never knew before.

Last, but definitely not least, I interviewed Lolypop93.

xoTiaox: About how long have you been a Ymail Helper?
Lolypop93: I have been a y-mail helper for over a year. I became one in early 2006, and I had to y-mail scyllacat saying why I wanted to be one, fellow y-mail helper, Amanda helped me out.
xoTiaox: Do you ever get annoyed when the bell rings constantly, from the same Whyvillian while you are chatting with one of your friends?
Lolypop93: Only if it is a really important discussion with one of my friends. Otherwise I love helping out Whyville's newest members!
xoTiaox: What are the ups and downs of being a Y-mail Helper?
Lolypop93: There are many ups, and many downs, an up is that people look up to you as a role model, and they really respect you. a down would probably be those few times when they don't respect the helper at the desk, and they say things like "You're a bad helper" Just because you don't know something.
xoTiaox: Do you feel that Y-mail Helpers should be given more credit for what they do?
Lolypop93: Not too much. I like just being able to help Whyville, and to be respected for it is enough for me!
xoTiaox: And lastly, do you have any advice for the soon-to-be-Y-mail-Helpers?
Lolypop93: My only advice is be patient. I know many helpers will say this because if you are not patient while someone is asking a question, you will not last very long =D

So, there you have it, for all of the Newbies out there reading this, if you have a question related to Whyville, please don't feel intimidated to ask, but please, remember to say a simple "please" and "thank you", and that Y-mail Helpers don't need you to write a WITS for them, but please respect us. And remember, that Y-mail Helpers chat/hangout/etc etc with citizens too, so if you are going to ring the bell, please ring it one time, and wait.

Also, for those soon-to-be-Y-mail Helpers, make sure to use appropriate language in chatrooms so you don't get taped, work on your salary to be 100 clams or more, be registered as a citizen for 90 days, and after that, click on the Y-mail Helper link on the bottom of your Destination Menu. If you are qualified to become a Y-mail Helper, it will tell you, take the test and good luck!
