What are you doing to your body? Drinking? Smoking? Using drugs? Getting piercings and tattoos? Maybe you're cutting yourself? Overweight? There is so much that you can hurt your body with. You need to choose between being "cool," or being healthy. This series will show what you are doing to yourself when you take those pills, or when you get your tongue pierced.

This week's topic is on piercing: what is taking it too far and how you are hurting yourself, whether you know it or not.

Many pre-teens and teenagers have piercings; both boys and girls. Many girls have a single piercing in their ears. Some boys do, too. However, many people have piercings in other places like their belly buttons, tongues, lips, faces, eye brows, and genital. They're even here in Whyville!

Health Risks

Pierceings cause open holes into your body. When you pierce your ears, or any other part of your body, you open your skin, allowing germs to enter. When germs enter, you get an infection. Although usually minor, they can turn bad, even deadly. Also, when you get your piercing, the piercing gun or needle may be contaminated from not being sterilized after its last use, potentially giving you a disease like Hepatitis, or AIDS! If you get a piercing, make sure it is from a reputable person. Do not have your friends pierce it; make sure you go to a reputable professional!

After you get your piercing, you must take care of it properly. If you do not, you're asking for trouble. The jewelry you put in may look nice, but you may have an allergic reaction to it. Remember, if you see anything wrong with your piercing, immediately tell your parents. If you pierce your tongue, you may accidentally rip it out. It also hits your teeth, causing increased chipping and decay. If you pierce your genitals, fluid coming out may infect it.

Societies' Beliefs

Most people, but not everybody, consider ear piercings okay, but believe anything else is vulgar and appalling. When you get an "extreme" piercing or an extreme number of them, you run the risk of offending the public, automatically disqualifying yourself for certain jobs, and possibly offending your friends and family. Not to mention looking kind of creepy . . . always ask your parents permission before you do anything to your body.

I hope this has made you think twice about getting that belly button piercing. Whenever you do something to your body, consider the long term effects. Ask yourself, "Is this something I am willing to deal with for the rest of my life?" Maybe then you can make the right decision. See ya back next week!
