It's hard to think we will cease to exist someday. Death is by far the hardest thing to grasp. To wrap your mind around the fact that, one day, you will be in the soil somewhere, like millions of other people an no one will be thinking about you, wondering how your day was, sending you their love . . . you are simply not living anymore.

We hear about death everywhere. Deaths by fires, car accidents, old age, heart attack, or cancer. We don't really think about those people much. We don't really care until we realize that will be us. There is absolutely no avoiding it.

And it's incredibly sad that someday we will never see the stars again, smell that sweet smell of springtime, see our friends, feel the softness of that red blanket, or laugh. I mean, laughing. I can't imagine never laughing again. What you have done on this earth, no one will remember. To the mountains, you were a blip in time then you were gone. To the earth itself, you were just one of the many passing through. Yes, it is sad but it is true.

Do you ever wonder wonder what your last breath of air will taste like? Will you ever know when your last breath will be? Will it hurt? What do you see? Something beautiful or just this world slowly fading to black? Do you ever think about these things?

Well I do.

I've always been somewhat interested in death, life after death, the whole thing, since I was about eleven. That September, when my grandfather died, it was the first death I've experienced of someone close to me. It really shook me. Ever since then, death has reoccurred in my thoughts many of times.

If it's one thing I've realized it's that death is a sad thing, but it isn't bad. There are exceptions like crashes, homicides, suicides, but really, death is part of the human cycle. There is nothing we can do about it, there is nothing we can do to avoid it.

So, I guess the whole point of this week's column is, death isn't something you should be afraid of. It happens to all of us, it's part of the cycle, it's normal. Why should we be afraid of it? It is sad that you will be leaving this world we all love so much, we'll never taste chocolate again, oh goodness, get a hug from our family, run our hands through a cold stream, smile. Yes, it is sad. But death isn't bad, it might even be beautiful.

I believe that everybody goes to a place that is higher. Whether it is heaven or somewhere else, I think that we'll all be leaving this world to go to a better place.

Yes, I think about death. But I'm not weird, depressed, or whatever you will undoubtedly think up. Thinking about death does not make my mood plunge, it doesn't make me have that feeling of dread in my stomach. Knowing that I will die someday just makes me want to live my life to the fullest. I want to laugh, cry, scream and love as much as I can before my time comes.

I want to take deep breaths of this air so I'll never forget what it tastes like . . . what it was like to breathe.

This is what I think about?
Do you?
