I'm back with another exotic and rare species! And this week's animal is the Crested Shelduck. Below is a picture.
This species is critically endangered, some believe it is extinct, but there are some sights of them. But it has not been definitively sighted since 1964!!
Description
The male duck has greenish-black crown, breast, primaries and tail, while the rest of its face, chin and throat are brownish black. The males belly and under tail coverts are a dark-grey. The female has a white eye ring, black crest, a white face, chin, throat and neck, and a dark brown body.
Diet
There are so few Crested Shelducks that their diet is unknown! But it's probably, mollusks, crustaceans and other invertebrates and water plants.
Habitat
This is also unknown, but confirmed reports locations are in East Asia and wetlands of China, ranging from reservoir and streams to marshland.
Size and Weight
Their weight is unknown but there total length is 64 cm; wing length 30 to 32 cm.
Life Span and Lifestyle
Their life span is unknown, and little is known about the way the live but they have been observed of small groups of two to eight.
Population
Sadly, around only 50 pairs remain! The reason is probably over-hunting but this has not been confirmed.
Although a lot of the information is unknown, I hope this also has helped the spotlight move a little closer to the Crested Shelducks!
