PANDEMIC

A few days later it was Monday again. My alarm clock sounded like a fire alarm. I slammed my hand on the off button. I got up I looked into my full length mirror. My brown hair was tangled and wild. Good thing I always got up earlier on Mondays; it took me twice as long to get ready. I only see Julie in the afternoons; she is too lazy to wake up so early.

I tried on outfit after outfit. I didn't want to stand out. I wanted to blend in, and be comfortable. I ended up in dark wash jeans, a maroon shit, and my black sweatshirt. I brushed through my hair then shook it for volume. I didn't bother putting on make-up; I didn't need to be extra beautiful.

After what felt like hours of fixing myself up I was walking through the halls of my junior high school. I tried to blend in with the crowd. I opened my locker without even looking at the numbers, my hand was used to running, stopping, and turning again. I grabbed my math book and quickly turned around. My hair whipped around smacking something behind me. Standing an inch from my face was a boy's chest. I had actually slammed my face it to his chest. I was holding my nose and my eyes focused on who the boy was. His name was Jonathon, the boy who had had the party.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry. Is your nose bleeding?" He said and leaned down until we were face to face. I was speechless his dark brown eyes were so beautiful.

I took my hand off of my nose and sure enough there was warm red blood on my hand. "Uh excuse me," I said. I ran to the girls' bathroom, droplets of blood trailing behind me.

When I got home I told Julie and Raffa what had happened. I wasn't going to, but my mom saw blood stains on my shirt. My mom, being nosy, asked me what had happened. I lied and said I got hit in the head playing dodgeball. Julie was listening and insisted I tell them the truth.

"Want me to injure the boy for ye'?" Raffa said.

"No, it wasn't his fault," I gasped.

"You like him, I can tell. Don't you Sarah?" Julie asked smirking.

"I do not!" I snapped. Color was rising in my face, and not just from my anger.

Raffa and Julie just grinned back at me.

In the morning I was back in school walking to my math class. I was going five minutes early so I wouldn't bump in to Jonathon again. The hallway I was walking down was packed, so I turned around to go a different route. Did I break a mirror the other day? I was having the worst luck, because Jonathon was standing right in front of me.

"Can I talk to you Sarah?" he whispered.

I shook my head up and down speechless.

"First of all I'm sorry that I gave you a bloody nose." I opened my mouth to say something but he stopped me.

"No, wait, let me finish. Can you really see these creatures?" His soft voice said. He looked me in the eyes. He was serious.

"Uh," I couldn't talk, I just left my mouth hanging open.

"I can see them too, goblins, and fairies, I can see them," he repeated.

I choked out one word, well not really a word, a sound, "Oh."

When I sat down in my seat I told my math teacher I felt sick. He just sighed and gave me an office pass. I walked into the office holding my stomach. I wasn't lying really, I really did feel nauseous. I guess my acting skills needed work. The nurse just let me lie on the flat mat, which was supposed to be a bed, for one period. I was sent back to class for English. Unfortunately, Jonathon was in that class too.

I sat behind and to the side of Jonathon. I already had an 'A' in this class. One day of not paying attention wouldn't hurt. I spent the whole time trying to get my mind off of what Jonathon had said. I sneaked a look at him. My eyes were hiding behind my curtain of long hair.

He was beautiful. He had black hair, it was almost touching his shoulders. His skin was red and tan, I was guessing his was Native American. His face was round and soft, not hard yet like the other boys. He was a head taller than me and lean. This was the first time I had actually looked at him.

When I got home I ran up the stairs yelling forrn Julie. She was sitting in font of my mirror fixing her hair.

"Julie! A boy can see you too!" I yelled.

"Another person? I have to go tell the leader now!" she shouted over her shoulder as her wings flapped like a hummingbirds out the window.

She came back after an hour. "The leader said you must bring the boy to the clearing, he must talk to him."

I had a lump in my throat, and it felt like I was riding a roller coaster at Disneyland.

At least it shouldn't be too hard to find him, he usually found me. I waited by my locker for him. He was walking towards me, but his head was down. I hope he didn't think that he was crazy, like I had.

"Jonathon! Wait up. I have to show you something, come over to my house after school."

He mumbled something I couldn't hear; I thought he said, "Okay." I guess I would have to wait until three o'clock.

When the three o'clock bell rang I sat down on the right side of the bus. I was watching intently to see if Jake would get on. He did, but I didn't notice it. He just plopped down right next to me. We were silent the whole bus ride, except for our grunts as we went over potholes.

I got up and he followed as we walked out of the bus. "Your house is up there?" he said while his eyes trailed up the hill. I just sighed and started trudging up.

We quickly dropped our stuff off in my room and then I led him out in to the forest. I knew the way by heart, and we were both in the clearing after about six minutes. Just like Julie said all of the creatures were gathered in the clearing. Julie came to stand beside me.

She smiled and whispered, "He is cute."

The leader motioned for Jonathon to come forward. Both of them took a walk to talk in private. I remembered when I had taken a walk with the same leader years ago. He had told me everything about goblins and fairies. I was amazed my fairy tales were coming true. The leader was smart, I would have been terrified to talk to a whole group of creatures. One on one with a thing that was just as tall as a seven year-old wasn't scary at all.

We waited for awhile, and then they finally came back. Jonathon looked a little queasy so I stayed a good distance from him.

"Are you okay?" I asked. He muttered something again, I hated when he did that.

I needed to calm him down so we walked down to the beach. I left my mom a note saying where I was. We bought two sodas and sat down in the warm sand. My mind was wandering,

"Hmm?"

Jonathon's voice unlocked me from my mind. I felt bad for zoning out on him.

"Sorry? What were you saying?" I asked. I hope he wasn't hurt.

"How long have you been seeing them? I mean it must have been hard," he whispered. It was weird hearing him be so sensitive.

"For years, it was hard at the beginning, then it was fine, but after my accident I forgot everything about them. Everyone found out my secret, but they thought I was crazy, and sometimes so did I," I whispered back. Tears had almost come out, but the salty wind had dried my eyes. I didn't like talking about those bad time with anyone, but with Jonathon I was comfortable.

We walked back silently. I was smiling to myself; I finally had someone to talk to about the things I saw. Now he saw them too.
