How many times has this happened to you: You save all your money for the newest and coolest thing all the kids in school have . . . and then right after you buy it, there's already a new version out? Perhaps your parents don't even give you an allowance so you couldn't buy the newest and coolest thing even if you wanted to! Or when you just get comfortable with your life, your parents MOVE you and your family to a strange city where you don't know ANYONE and you are forced to cope with starting over? Are your friends talking about you behind your back? Life is full of challenges and disappointments . . . if you choose to look at it that way.

You can look at difficulties in your life as a crisis. You can freak out and post on your blog how disgusting your parents are for not giving you enough allowance and tell your friends your parents are mean and nasty for making you move you to another school where you don't know anyone. You can share with your friends on Whyville how your friends in real-life are such back-stabbers . . . no one is stopping you. You can choose to let these things get you upset . . . if you want to.

You can also look at these challenges as a way to grow. If you don't have enough money from allowances/birthday money to buy the things you want, you can look at this as an opportunity to start your own business. There are plenty of jobs around your neighborhood you could do that will help you earn major cash. You could help your neighbors with yard work, babysit their kids (if you are old enough) or ask your parents if they will pay you for doing odd chores around the house such as cleaning the fish tank or organizing the garage. When you move to another city, you are meeting tons of new people you wouldn't know otherwise. You may even find better people in your new city than there were in your old city! You will make new friends and soon find yourself as happy (or happier) in your new home. When your friends talk behind your back, take this opportunity to show them what a good person you are. This is your chance to set a good example. DON'T EVER talk about them behind their backs . . . even though it sounds fair, this is terrible for your character. Instead, be nice to them. You may want to start looking for new friends until your old friends straighten out.

It is all a matter of perspective. It is not the things that happen in your life that will make you upset, it is the attitude you choose to have about these things. You can live your life in misery if you want to. You can also enjoy life for what it has to offer -- even though I know it gets bumpy at times. Be thankful for everything you have, and keep a positive attitude when things don't go exactly as planned. You will find yourself much happier and you will set a good example for those around you.
