We were spies in training,
holding in the darkness
at the summit of the stairs.

Our lips were swollen up,
both the bottom and the top,
from kisses that kept on.

You were the first one.
You were the first one.

Dawn broke like glass and
the sun shone upon the aftermath -
a bitter man, a knotted throat.

Calmed down as I was drowned
in the liquid relief of time
and the orphan love to come.

But you were the first real one.
You were the first real one.

And it was lust at first sight
that skinned me alive
and left me with another layer gone
and no one to love.

I pushed back a time or two
and once again misheld you
just as I'd misled myself.

We had started at the end
